One Week in Bulgaria: The Perfect 7-Day Itinerary

Published: 4 July 2026·4 min read

Bulgaria packs an extraordinary amount into a small country: a lively capital, UNESCO monasteries, Europe's oldest continuously inhabited city, a medieval fortress town, alpine lakes, and a warm coastline — most of it within a few hours' drive of the next. One week is the sweet spot for a first visit. This itinerary strings the highlights into a logical route, with day-trip options, travel tips, and links to detailed guides for every stop.

🗺️ The Route at a Glance

Days 1–2: Sofia — capital, museums, and mountain backdrop Day 3: Rila Monastery day trip (add the Seven Rila Lakes in summer) Days 4–5: Plovdiv — old town, Roman ruins, day trips Day 6: Veliko Tarnovo — medieval capital Day 7: Black Sea coast or back to Sofia

Everything is doable by bus and train; a car helps for the Rila days. See our getting around Bulgaria guide for the logistics and our trip cost guide to budget it.

📅 Day 1–2: Sofia

Start in the capital. Two days is enough to see the golden-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral, the Roman ruins beneath the streets, the ancient Serdika complex, the mineral springs, and Vitosha mountain on the skyline. Use our detailed 72 Hours in Sofia itinerary to fill the days, and if you're deciding how to split time between the two big cities, our Sofia vs Plovdiv comparison helps.

Where to stay: the centre, within walking distance of the main sights and the metro.

📅 Day 3: Rila Monastery (Day Trip)

Take a day trip to Rila Monastery, Bulgaria's most visited site and a UNESCO World Heritage jewel deep in the mountains. In summer, active travelers can swap or extend into a hike at the spectacular Seven Rila Lakes. Both are easiest by car or organised tour from Sofia.

📅 Day 4–5: Plovdiv

Travel to Plovdiv (about 2 hours by bus) — Europe's oldest continuously inhabited city, with a beautifully restored Old Town, a Roman amphitheatre still used for concerts, and the arty Kapana district. Two nights lets you slow down and take a day trip:

  • The Kazanlak Rose Valley and the Valley of the Thracian Kings.
  • The frozen-in-time National Revival town of Koprivshtitsa, or more stops along the National Revival trail.

Where to stay: in or beside the Old Town.

📅 Day 6: Veliko Tarnovo

Head north to Veliko Tarnovo, the dramatic medieval capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire, with houses stacked above the Yantra River gorge and the mighty Tsarevets Fortress. It's a highlight in its own right and a natural stepping stone toward the coast.

📅 Day 7: The Black Sea (or Back to Sofia)

Finish on the coast or loop back to the capital for your flight.

  • Beach finale: continue to Varna or Burgas and the UNESCO old town of Nessebar or the charming Sozopol. Our best beaches near Varna and near Burgas guides help you choose, and the Black Sea coast road trip links it all.
  • Loop back: return to Sofia (well connected by bus, train, and domestic flight from Varna/Burgas) for departure.

❄️ Winter Variation

Travelling in ski season? Keep Sofia, Rila, and Plovdiv, but swap the coast for the mountains: base yourself in Bansko for a few days on the slopes, or compare your options in our Borovets vs Bansko vs Pamporovo guide.

💡 Practical Tips

  • Best time: May–September for the mixed city-and-coast route; December–March for the ski version. See our best time to visit Bulgaria guide.
  • Getting around: frequent buses link every stop; rent a car for the Rila/mountain days. Full details in getting around Bulgaria.
  • Budget: around €450–800 per person for a mid-range week — see the trip cost guide.
  • Currency: Bulgaria uses the euro (since January 2026), and cards are widely accepted.

Seven days, one unforgettable loop through Bulgaria's best. Keep planning your trip with Mestala.com.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is one week enough to see Bulgaria?▾

One week is enough to see the highlights: Sofia, Rila Monastery, Plovdiv, Veliko Tarnovo, and either the Black Sea coast or the mountains. You won't cover everything, but a well-planned 7 days gives a rich mix of capital city, UNESCO heritage, ancient old towns, and either beaches or peaks.

What is the best 7-day route in Bulgaria?▾

The classic loop is Sofia (2 days) → a Rila Monastery day trip → Plovdiv (2 days) → Veliko Tarnovo (1 day) → finishing on the Black Sea coast or back in Sofia. It combines the capital, the country's most-visited monastery, its oldest living city, its medieval capital, and a coastal or mountain finale.

Do I need a car for a week in Bulgaria?▾

No — the main cities are well linked by frequent, cheap intercity buses and trains, so the route works car-free. A rental car adds flexibility for Rila Monastery, the Seven Rila Lakes, and rural detours; many travelers do the cities by bus and rent a car only for the mountain days.

When is the best time for a one-week Bulgaria trip?▾

May, June, and September are ideal for a mixed city-and-coast trip: warm, uncrowded, and good value. July and August are best for beach time but busiest on the coast. For a winter version, swap the coast for skiing in Bansko. Spring and autumn are perfect for the cities and mountains.

How much does a week in Bulgaria cost?▾

A week of mid-range travel typically costs around €450–800 per person including accommodation, food, local transport, and attractions, excluding international flights. Budget travelers can do it for closer to €300, while comfortable travel with private transfers and better hotels runs €1,000 or more.

Can I combine mountains and beaches in one week?▾

You can, but it's tight — Bulgaria's coast and its highest mountains are on opposite sides of the country. For one week it's better to pick a focus: cities plus the Black Sea, or cities plus the Rila/Pirin mountains. Two weeks lets you comfortably do both.
