10 Days in Bulgaria: The Grand Tour Itinerary
Ten days is the perfect length for a grand tour of Bulgaria — enough to combine the capital, the mountains, the great old cities, the Rose Valley's heritage, and several unhurried days on the Black Sea. This itinerary links the country's best into one logical loop, with day-trip options and links to detailed guides for every stop. It builds on our one week in Bulgaria itinerary with more depth and a proper beach finale.

📅 Days 1–2: Sofia & Vitosha
Ease in with the capital: cathedrals, Roman ruins, museums, and its café culture — all in our 72 Hours in Sofia guide. On day two, escape up Vitosha, the mountain on Sofia's doorstep, for a hike or a lift ride.
📅 Day 3: Rila Monastery & the Seven Rila Lakes
Head into the Rila Mountains for Rila Monastery, Bulgaria's most visited site, and — in summer — the spectacular Seven Rila Lakes. Sleep near the monastery or in Sapareva Banya to do both at a relaxed pace.
📅 Days 4–5: Plovdiv
Move to Plovdiv, Europe's oldest living city — Roman theatre, restored Old Town, and the arty Kapana quarter. Use a day for Koprivshtitsa or more of the National Revival trail.
📅 Day 6: The Rose Valley & Kazanlak
Cross to Kazanlak and the Rose Valley — rose fields, the Rose Museum, and the Valley of the Thracian Kings with its golden treasures and painted tombs. Time it for early June and you'll catch the Rose Festival.
📅 Day 7: Veliko Tarnovo
Continue to Veliko Tarnovo, the medieval capital stacked above the Yantra gorge, crowned by Tsarevets Fortress — a dramatic stepping stone toward the coast.
📅 Days 8–10: The Black Sea Coast
Finish with three relaxing days by the sea:
- Varna — the coast's lively cultural capital, with great beaches nearby.
- Nessebar — UNESCO old town of medieval churches.
- Sozopol and the southern beaches near Burgas.
Tie the coast together with our Black Sea coast road trip. Fly home from Varna or Burgas, or loop back to Sofia.
❄️ Winter Variation
In ski season, keep the cities and Rila, then swap the coast for the mountains — several days in Bansko or Borovets, plus spa time (see Bulgaria in winter).
💡 Practical Tips
- Best time: May–September for the coast-and-mountains route; see our best time to visit Bulgaria guide.
- Transport: buses between cities, a car for the mountains and Rose Valley.
- Currency: Bulgaria uses the euro (since 2026); cards are widely accepted.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 10 days enough to see Bulgaria?▾
Ten days is ideal for a grand tour of Bulgaria: enough to combine the capital and mountains, the great old cities of Plovdiv and Veliko Tarnovo, the Rose Valley and Thracian heritage, and several days on the Black Sea coast — without rushing. It's the sweet spot between a one-week highlights trip and a fully in-depth exploration.
What is the best 10-day route in Bulgaria?▾
A classic loop runs Sofia → Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes → Plovdiv → the Rose Valley and Kazanlak → Veliko Tarnovo → the Black Sea coast (Varna, Nessebar, Sozopol), before flying home from Varna or Burgas or looping back to Sofia. It blends the capital, mountains, ancient cities, heritage, and beaches.
Do you need a car for a 10-day Bulgaria trip?▾
You can do the main cities and coast by frequent, cheap buses and trains, but a rental car adds real freedom for the Rila mountains, the Rose Valley, and rural detours. Many travelers mix the two — buses between big cities and a car for the mountain and countryside days. See our getting around Bulgaria guide for details.
When is the best time for a 10-day Bulgaria tour?▾
Late May to September suits this coast-and-mountains route best, with June and September offering warm weather and thinner crowds. The Rose Festival peaks in early June. July and August are hottest and busiest on the coast. Spring and autumn are lovely for the cities and mountains if you skip beach time.
How much does 10 days in Bulgaria cost?▾
As a rough guide, budget travelers can manage on around €40–50 a day, mid-range travelers €70–110 a day, plus transport and international flights — so roughly €700–1,300 per person for ten mid-range days excluding flights. Bulgaria remains one of the most affordable countries in Europe. See our trip cost guide for a full breakdown.
Can I combine mountains and the coast in 10 days?▾
Yes — 10 days is enough to comfortably do both, which one week can't. This itinerary pairs the Rila mountains and heritage cities in the first half with several relaxing days on the Black Sea coast in the second, making it the ideal length for a complete Bulgaria experience.
