That is not because there is nothing to see. It is simply because there are no overcrowded resorts or mass-tourist hubs pulling travelers off the main Sofia–coast highway. Instead, its greatest attractions are spread across quiet villages best explored with a car.
This route strings the highlights together into a rewarding 4-day road trip (~600 km) starting and ending in Sofia.

🚂 Day 1 — Through the Iskar Gorge to Vratsa
Head north out of Sofia into the Iskar Gorge — a 65 km canyon where the Iskar River cuts straight through the Balkan range, passing Svoge.
Stop at Lakatnik for the dramatic 250-metre limestone cliffs and panoramic lookout, visit Cherepish Monastery perched on a river bend, and marvel at the Ritlite rock walls before the valley opens near Mezdra.
Tip: The Sofia–Mezdra railway line runs parallel to the river through the entire canyon. If you have an extra day, taking the train through the Iskar Gorge makes a wonderful standalone day trip from Sofia.
Continue to Vratsa (~110 km total for the day), where the towering 400-metre cliffs of Vratsata Gorge rise directly over the edge of town. Visit the Regional Historical Museum to see the famous Rogozen Treasure — a collection of 165 Thracian silver vessels.
🌉 Day 2 — Highlights of the Vrachanski Balkan

- God's Bridge near Lilyache — a massive natural limestone arch formed by a collapsed cave system. Accessible year-round and one of the most photogenic spots on the trip.
- Ledenika Cave — featuring ten underground chambers and impressive ice formations in winter and spring.
- Skaklya Waterfall above Zgorigrad — Bulgaria's highest drop (141 m). Best visited in spring, as it often dries up by late summer.
If time permits, drive up to the historic monument at Okolchitsa Peak.
🧶 Day 3 — Berkovitsa, Chiprovtsi & Belogradchik
Morning: Drive west to Berkovitsa (~30 km), situated at the foot of Kom Peak (the western starting point of the Kom–Emine trail). Visit Ivan Vazov's house-museum and the peaceful Klisura Monastery.
Midday: Continue to Chiprovtsi (~30 km), world-renowned for its UNESCO-listed carpet-weaving tradition. Tour Chiprovtsi Monastery and take a short hike to Chiprovtsi Waterfall.
Afternoon: Drive to Belogradchik (~60 km) — the centerpiece of the journey. Towering red sandstone rock formations rise 200 metres above the town. The ancient Belogradchik Fortress is seamlessly built into the cliffs. Plan to arrive for late-afternoon light when the rocks glow deep red.

🏰 Day 4 — Magura Cave & Baba Vida Fortress in Vidin
Morning: Visit Magura Cave (~25 km from Belogradchik), world-famous for its prehistoric cave paintings executed in bat guano, dating back thousands of years.
Midday: Head north to Vidin (~50 km) to explore Baba Vida Fortress — Bulgaria's only fully preserved medieval castle, standing right on the banks of the Danube River.
Afternoon: Drive back to Sofia (~200 km, ~3 hours via Petrohan Pass or Mezdra), or cross the New Europe Bridge into Romania if continuing your travels north.
