When Sofia turns cold and grey, the best escape is usually an hour or two's drive away: warm mineral water, a small town with a guest house, or a mountain with snow. Here are 10 weekend getaways with an overnight stay, all within about 2.5 hours of the capital, grouped by what the weekend is for — warm water, a quiet town, or skiing.

If you only have a day, see our day trips from Sofia. This guide is about the places worth at least one night — especially from October to December.

♨️ Warm water: mineral baths and spa towns

Autumn and winter are when warm water makes most sense. One thing to know: most outdoor municipal pools run only in summer. From October to May the water is in indoor baths and hotel pools. For a comparison of the spa towns, see our spa and thermal springs guide.

1. Velingrad — the spa capital of the Balkans

Velingrad is about 134 km away (around 2 hours), with direct buses from Sofia, or a train to Septemvri and the narrow-gauge railway from there. It has more than 80 mineral springs and over 60 hotels. The big outdoor municipal pool closes on 1 October, so in November and December choose a hotel with a working outdoor pool. Everything for the weekend — from Lepenitsa cave to Kleptuza — is in our Velingrad spa weekend guide.

2. Sapareva Banya and Panichishte

Sapareva Banya is about 75 km south-west of Sofia, at the northern foot of Rila. It has Bulgaria's only geyser, where water emerges at 103 °C. The municipal mineral bath is indoor, with water around 36–38 °C, and some of the outdoor pools in town and at hotels stay open in winter — check before you go, because opening patterns change. About 10 km further up, at 1,383 m, is the resort of Panichishte — a ski tow and conifer forest, with the chairlift towards the Seven Rila Lakes leaving from Pionerska hut above it.

Without a car: there is one direct bus a day from Ovcha Kupel bus station; it's easier to take one of the hourly buses to Dupnitsa and a local bus from there, which runs about every 30 minutes.

3. Kyustendil

Kyustendil is about 100 km away, roughly an hour and a half by car, with 10–12 buses a day and a train via Pernik. The town has 40 mineral springs with water up to 74 °C. Chifte Banya — built on the site of a 1489 Ottoman bath and completed in its current form in 1913 — is a working public bath where the general pools alternate between women's and men's days (Saturday for women, Sunday for men). There's enough around it for a day: the Vladimir Dimitrov – Maystora gallery with the largest collection of the painter's work, the Roman baths, Hisarlaka fortress and the medieval church of St George. The full weekend is in our Kyustendil guide.

4. Bankya — the closest mineral bath

Bankya is under 20 km west of the centre and the only place on this list you can reach by city transport — buses 42, 44, 47 and 49 from Lyulin and Slivnitsa metro stations. The restored Central Mineral Bath (the "Royal Bath", opened in 1911 to a design by Karl Hocheder) reopened in 2020 after more than 20 years closed. It's open daily from 9:00 to 20:00, with a 36.5–37 °C mineral pool and a children's pool. You don't need to stay the night here — but Bankya does have hotels if you want a quiet evening out of the city.

5. Varshets and Berkovitsa

Varshets is about 90 km north of Sofia and is traditionally considered Bulgaria's oldest spa resort, with a history dating to 1850 and the first state bath opened in 1910. The water is low in minerals, at 36–38 °C. Berkovitsa, about 18 km away, has museums open year-round. The road crosses the Petrohan Pass, which can close in snow — check before setting off. There is one direct bus a day via Berkovitsa, taking about 2 h 35. More on the area in our Montana, Berkovitsa and Kom guide.

🏘️ Small towns and walks

6. Koprivshtitsa

Koprivshtitsa is about 110 km away (around 1 h 40), with direct buses; the station is 7–8 km below the town, with a minibus up. An autumn or winter weekend here is quiet: the house-museums keep winter hours (09:00–17:00), and the summer crowds are gone. Watch the closing days — the Kableshkov, Debelyanov and Lyutov houses close on Mondays, and the Benkovski and Karavelov houses and the Museum of Education on Tuesdays. Everything else is in our Koprivshtitsa guide.

7. Vratsa and Ledenika cave

Panoramic view of Vratsa, Bulgaria, nestled against the dramatic cliffs of the Balkan Mountains

Vratsa is about 110 km away (around 1 h 30), with regular trains and buses. 16 km above town is Ledenika cave — its name comes from the ice that forms near the entrance in winter and early spring. You need a car for the cave, the road can be affected by snow, and opening hours are seasonal, so call ahead. Details are in our Vratsa and Ledenika guide.

8. Iskar Gorge — a winter walk without a car

If you want a winter walk near Sofia, this is it. The Sofia–Mezdra train runs the length of the gorge in 1.5–2 hours, stopping at Svoge, Bov, Lakatnik, Cherepish and Lyutibrod. Cherepish Monastery is about 1 km from the platform, and the climb to the top of the Lakatnik Rocks takes about 45 minutes on a path that's slippery in the wet. A night in Svoge or a guest house in the gorge turns the walk into a weekend. More in our Iskar Gorge guide.

9. Borovets

Borovets is 73 km away (about 1 h 10 by car); without a car, take a bus to Samokov and a shuttle up. The ski season usually starts in mid-December. On winter weekends the car parks fill by 09:00 — arrive before 08:30. Everything on the slopes and lifts is in our Borovets guide.

10. Bansko

Bansko is about 160 km away (around 2 h 30 by car, about 3 hours by bus) — at the edge of weekend range, but Bulgaria's biggest ski area. If you can, avoid the weeks around Christmas and New Year. Details are in our Bansko guide; if you're still choosing, see our Borovets vs Bansko vs Pamporovo comparison.

🧭 How to choose

  • Warm water and quiet: Velingrad or Kyustendil with an overnight stay; Bankya if you'd rather sleep in Sofia.

  • Snow without skiing: Panichishte above Sapareva Banya, or Ledenika above Vratsa.
  • A weekend for two in a guest house: Koprivshtitsa or the Iskar Gorge.
  • Skiing: Borovets for proximity, Bansko for scale.

🚗 Just going for the day?

The classic same-day trips have their own guide: day trips from Sofia. From there you'll reach Vitosha, Rila Monastery and the Seven Rila Lakes. In December add the Christmas markets, and for the whole season see things to do in Bulgaria in winter.
