Most comparisons of the Bulgarian coast pit Golden Sands against Sunny Beach and stop there. That misses the more useful question. Those two are both purpose-built mega-resorts — they differ in character, but they are the same kind of holiday. Sozopol is a genuinely different proposition: a working historic old town that happens to have beaches, rather than a resort built around them.

So the real decision isn't north coast or south coast. It's resort or old town — and then, if it's a resort, which one.

Golden Sands: Forest Coolness and Rich Golden Shores

Located on the Northern coast, this resort is unique because it is bordered by the lush, dense forests of the Golden Sands Nature Park. Here, nature seamlessly merges with the sea, offering natural shade and fresher, cooler mountain air in the evenings. The beach is about 3.5 km long and up to 100 meters wide. The sand is clean with a beautiful deep golden hue, and the sea floor tends to get deeper a bit faster here, which is fantastic for swimming enthusiasts.

Sunny Beach: Endless Horizons and Shallow Waters

To the south, Sunny Beach offers one of the most impressive coastlines in the Balkans—stretching over 8 km in length and reaching up to 120 meters in width in some areas. The sand here is exceptionally fine and powdery, and the sea remains very shallow and safe dozens of meters from the shore. This makes it ideal for long romantic walks at sunset and carefree sunbathing. Unlike Golden Sands, the terrain here is entirely flat and open.

Sozopol: Small Coves Beneath an Old Town

Sozopol plays a different game entirely. Its beaches are modest by comparison — the small Central Beach sits right below the old town, and the larger Harmanite Beach serves the newer quarter, both with soft sand and shallow, gentle water. Neither is remotely the scale of the other two.

What you get instead is setting: a rocky peninsula of dark-timber National Revival houses and cobbled lanes running down to the water, with the wilder Kavatsi beach and the southern dunes a short drive away. If the beach itself is the point of your holiday, this is the weakest of the three. If you want somewhere that exists outside the tourist season, it's the only real choice.

Sunny Beach: The Mecca of 24/7 Parties

If you are looking for world-class clubbing, Sunny Beach has no equal. The resort is legendary for its nightlife, massive mega-clubs, open-air beach bars, and hosting international DJs. The iconic party zone around the South Beach (home to popular beach clubs like Bedroom Beach) gathers thousands of young travelers from all over Europe. The party here literally does not stop 24 hours a day.

Golden Sands: Compact and Localized Nightlife

Golden Sands also offers a very vibrant nightlife scene, but in a slightly more compact format. The famous "Party Street" in the heart of the resort is packed with clubs, bars, and live music venues. The area is traditionally highly popular among German, Scandinavian, and Romanian tourists. The atmosphere is incredible, but because the party is localized in the center, it allows the outer edges of the resort to remain peaceful.

Sozopol: Quiet, and That's the Point

Let's be direct: if nightlife is what you're after, Sozopol is the wrong town. There are no mega-clubs and no beach raves. Evenings mean seafront restaurants, wine on a terrace above the water, live music in small bars, and the old town lanes at their best once the day-trippers leave.

The exception is the Apollonia Festival of Arts at the start of September — around ten days of music, theatre and exhibitions that give the town a genuine cultural buzz neither resort can match.

Both resorts feature excellent infrastructure for children, but your choice of location within them matters significantly.

• In Sunny Beach: For a family holiday, avoid the noisy ideal center. The northern section of the resort (towards Sveti Vlas) and the southern zone (towards Nessebar) are considerably quieter, and the shallow shoreline is perfect for little ones. A massive plus is Action Aquapark, a water park with dozens of attractions for all age groups.
• In Golden Sands: Most family-oriented hotels are nestled amidst the greenery and quiet of the nature park, away from the beachfront promenade. The resort is much calmer outside the main central strip. Families can also enjoy the Aquapolis water park, designed in a unique Moorish-Mediterranean style and located in the forest with panoramic views of the sea.
• In Sozopol: The town beaches are shallow and gentle, the old town is compact and largely pedestrian, and there are boat trips and easygoing seafront cafés. There is no water park and far less organised entertainment, so older children who want a resort programme may be bored — while the cobbled lanes are uneven enough to test a stroller. It suits families who want a calm, real place over an activity schedule.

🚗 Round 4: How to Get There

Transportation accessibility is excellent for both destinations, whether you are traveling by car, bus, or plane.

• To Golden Sands: The nearest airport and major railway station are in Varna (about 25 km away). Driving from Varna to Golden Sands is quick and easy along a wide four-lane road. There is a frequent and inexpensive public bus line (Bus 409) that connects Varna Airport and the city center directly to the resort every 15-20 minutes.
• To Sunny Beach: The closest airport is in Burgas (Sarafovo), located about 27 km away, while the Burgas railway station is 35 km away. The drive from Burgas is quick and well-maintained. Bus line 10 runs the Burgas–Nessebar–Sunny Beach corridor and passes the airport, so you can go straight up the coast without detouring into the city.

During the peak summer season (July and August), parking at both locations requires advance planning.

• Parking in Golden Sands: The resort operates as a controlled zone with a strictly enforced internal Blue Zone. Due to the dense forest and hilly terrain, free street parking spaces are highly limited. Most hotels have private parking lots, but they almost always charge an additional fee (roughly €8–13 per day). There are several large paid, guarded parking lots close to the beach. Tow trucks operate round-the-clock, so do not risk parking illegally.
• Parking in Sunny Beach: The resort is divided into managed zones and has a designated Blue Zone for street parking, where you pay via SMS or through tickets from on-site attendants. Many hotels have barriers and private spaces, but these fill up fast, making it vital to request a spot when booking. Around the central promenade and major clubs, you will find private paid parking lots, though their hourly rates can be quite high.
• Parking in Sozopol: The hardest of the three. The old town is largely pedestrian and effectively closed to visitor cars, so you park outside the peninsula and walk in. Paid lots sit at the edge of the old town and around Harmanite, and they fill early on summer days. If your accommodation is inside the old town, ask exactly where you're expected to leave the car before you arrive — this catches out a lot of first-time visitors.

If you want to break up your beach days with some cultural tourism, both locations offer fantastic alternatives nearby.

• From Golden Sands: Just a few minutes away lies the historic rock-hewn Aladzha Monastery. You can quickly hop over to Varna for a stroll through the Sea Garden or a visit to the Dolphinarium. Heading north, the beautiful town of Balchik (with its Palace and Botanical Garden), the stunning Bolata Beach, and the historic Cape Kaliakra await you.

• From Sunny Beach: The greatest geographical advantage here is the historic Old Town of Nessebar (a UNESCO World Heritage site), which sits directly adjacent to the resort. It can be reached easily by car, public bus, or a fun tourist mini-train. Also nearby is the upscale "Marina Dinevi" yacht port in Sveti Vlas, as well as the city of Burgas with its beautiful seaside park.

• From Sozopol: The wild southern coast is the draw — the dunes and quieter beaches running down towards Primorsko and Kiten, plus the Ropotamo reserve and boat trips along the river. Burgas is about 35 km north, and Nessebar is reachable but a longer haul than from Sunny Beach.
