Elena is the town of Elena ham and guest houses. This small Balkan town 41 km from Veliko Tarnovo has an old National Revival centre, a museum complex built around Bulgaria's first school for training teachers, and dozens of guest houses. In autumn and winter, its guest houses are among the most sought-after in Bulgaria. Autumn is the best moment: in late October the town celebrates its ham, and in November it goes quiet.

This guide covers the practical side of a weekend in Elena: how to get there, what to see, when the festival is, and where to walk in the Elena Balkan.

🏘️ Why Elena for a weekend

Elena has been known since 1430 and was a craft and trade centre during the National Revival — the town took part in the Velchova Conspiracy (1835) and the Tarnovo Uprising (1862). Today about 4,200 people live here, and the old centre with its Revival houses and churches is preserved.

The arcaded porch and green dome of a church in Elena's old town

For a weekend, that means a town you explore on foot, a quiet evening in a guest house and local food built around one product — Elena ham. If you like Revival towns, Elena is the quieter alternative to Tryavna and Koprivshtitsa.

🚗 Getting to Elena

By car

  • From Veliko Tarnovo: 41 km, about 50 minutes.
  • From Burgas: about 190 km, around 2 h 45.
  • From Varna: about 210 km, around 3 h 15.
  • From Sofia: about 260 km, around 3 h 45 — via Veliko Tarnovo.

Winter tyres are mandatory from 15 November to 1 March; the rules are in our driving in Bulgaria guide.

By bus

Buses from Veliko Tarnovo run via Zlataritsa: 5 a day on weekdays and 3 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. Direct buses from Sofia take about 3 h 20. Timetables change — the current ones are on the Elena tourist information centre's website.

By train

There isn't one. The railway to Elena ran from 1974 to 2003 and is now closed. The nearest station with regular trains is in Veliko Tarnovo.

🅿️ Parking

Elena is small, and everything in the centre is within walking distance. There is no paid parking in town, so you can leave the car on the street for free (checked October 2026). The old-town streets are steep and narrow, though, so ask when booking whether your guest house has space for a car. During the Elena Ham Festival the centre is taken over by the stage and stalls, so leave the car at your guest house and walk down.

🏛️ Daskalolivnitsa and the museums

The heart of the old town is the Daskalolivnitsa architectural-historical complex. Daskalolivnitsa was Bulgaria's first school for training teachers — founded by Ivan Momchilov in 1843, in a building from 1844 that now appears on the town's coat of arms. The complex also includes St Nicholas church with its murals and the Kamburov Inn, next to the still-active church of the Assumption.

Separate from the complex is the house-museum of Ilarion Makariopolski — a wealthy timber-framed house and the birthplace of one of the leaders of the struggle for an independent Bulgarian church. Both the complex and the house are on the list of the 100 National Tourist Sites, so bring your stamp booklet.

Opening hours (1 October – 30 April): Monday–Friday 8:30–17:00, Saturday 9:30–16:30, Sunday and holidays 9:30–13:30. Summer hours run slightly longer.

Tickets (checked October 2026): one site €2.56, combined ticket for five sites €7.67, family €12.78. Children under 7 enter free. Prices may change.

Seeing all the sites takes 2–3 hours. Sunday is the worst day for the museums — they close at lunchtime.

🥩 Elena ham and its festival

Elena ham (elenski but) is a salted, air-dried pork leg traditionally made only around Elena, and it can mature for years. Producers have applied for EU protected designation of origin, but as of March 2026 the procedure was not complete. You'll find it in local restaurants and from producers in town.

The Elena Ham Festival is the town's biggest event — three days of tastings, demonstrations, competitions, a folk programme and a craft market on Hristo Botev square. It's usually in late October, but the date moves: 8–10 November in 2024, 24–26 October in 2025, and in 2026 it is on 16–18 October — a week earlier than planned because of the presidential election on 25 October. Book early, because guest houses fill up for the festival weekend.

More on Bulgaria's regional specialities is in our Bulgarian food guide.

🥾 The Elena Balkan

Small Balkan hamlets are scattered around Elena, linked by forest paths.

  • Yovkovtsi reservoir: about 5 km from town. An easy walk or a short detour by car.
  • The route to Kapinovo Monastery: Elena – Marafeltsi – Valchevtsi – Kapinovo Monastery, about 4.5 hours one way, through several typical Elena Balkan hamlets and past Yovkovtsi reservoir. Kapinovo Monastery of St Nicholas was founded in 1272; Plakovo Monastery is about 2 km from it. It's a long forest hike — start early, carry water and plan how you'll get back, because late-autumn days are short. If you're driving, the monastery is closer to Veliko Tarnovo (about 20 km) than to Elena.

⏱️ How long you need

A weekend with one or two nights is enough:

  • Saturday: arrive, Daskalolivnitsa and the Makariopolski house (before they close), a walk around the old town and dinner with Elena ham.
  • Sunday: a walk to Yovkovtsi reservoir or along the route towards the monastery — or a detour to Veliko Tarnovo on the way home.

Remember that on Sundays the museums close at 13:30.

📅 When to go

  • Late October: the Elena Ham Festival — the liveliest weekend of the year. Book early.
  • November: the quietest time — good for a weekend for two in a guest house.
  • New Year: Elena's guest houses are among the most sought-after in autumn and winter. They're small and fill early, so book in the autumn.
  • Spring and summer: best for the long hikes in the Balkan.

🏡 Where to stay

Elena is a town of guest houses — most in old or restored Revival houses, some in the surrounding hamlets. The choice comes down to two things:

  • In town: everything is walkable, including the museums and restaurants.
  • In the hamlets around: quieter, with views of the Balkan, but you'll need a car for dinner.

A room for two costs about €60–70 a night (checked October 2026; prices may change). Before booking, check whether the house is let whole or by the room, whether there's parking, and what the minimum stay is over the holidays.

👨‍👩‍👧 Elena with kids

Elena works for a weekend with children, as long as the steep streets don't put you off. Under-7s enter the museums free, and Yovkovtsi reservoir is a short detour about 5 km away. The long route to Kapinovo Monastery is for older children used to walking.

🧭 What's nearby

  • Veliko Tarnovo and Arbanasi: about 50 minutes away. Tsarevets, the old town and the Arbanasi churches — see our Veliko Tarnovo weekend guide.
  • Tryavna: about 1 h 30 over the mountain road. Another Revival town, with its woodcarving school — see our Tryavna guide.
  • Kotel and Zheravna: to the east, about 1 h 25 to Kotel and 1 h 45 to Zheravna — more Revival houses and a carpet-weaving tradition.

For a longer route through the region, see our Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and Central Balkan road trip and the Bulgarian National Revival trail.

💡 What first-timers get wrong

  • Turning up on a Sunday afternoon for the museums. On Sundays they close at 13:30.
  • Counting on a train. The line has been closed since 2003 — from Tarnovo you travel by bus or car.
  • Not booking for the festival. On the ham festival weekend and at New Year, guest houses fill weeks ahead.
  • Starting late for the monastery. The route is about 4.5 hours one way — in late autumn the light goes fast.
