Varna Airport to the City Center & Golden Sands (2026)

Varna has the easiest airport transfer on the Bulgarian coast, and it comes down to a single bus. Line 409 runs from the terminal into the city in under 20 minutes and carries on to Golden Sands — meaning one bus, no changes, covers both the city and the main resort strip.

🚌 Bus 409 — The One You Want

Line 409 is the airport bus, and it does more than most airport buses anywhere:

• To central Varna: under 20 minutes
• To Golden Sands: about 50 minutes
• Runs: roughly 05:45 to 23:00
• Frequency: every 15–30 minutes, more often in summer

The stop is at the bus station in front of Terminal 2 arrivals — walk out and it's right there. Buses arrive no more than about 15 minutes apart in season.

Heading into town, the route calls at useful places rather than dumping you on a ring road: the Cathedral, the railway station, and the Sea Garden. Most central accommodation is a short walk from one of those.

This is the one thing to understand before boarding. Varna's fares work by zone, not a flat rate:

⚠️ Two Different Operators Run This Route — Check Before You Board

This is the single most useful thing to know about bus 409, and almost no guide mentions it.

Two separate companies operate buses on this route, and they are not equivalent:

The buses look similar and run the same numbered route, so it's easy to board the wrong one without noticing until the conductor comes round.

What to do:

• Install the TicketVarna app before you fly, and buy through it when you're on a city-operator bus — it's meaningfully cheaper.
• If a conductor approaches selling tickets, you're on the other company's bus. Your app ticket won't be valid there, so pay cash.
• Don't buy in the app until you've established which bus you're on. An app ticket on the wrong operator's bus is money wasted.
• Carry some euro coins or small notes regardless — you'll need them if you end up on the conductor-operated service, and contactless acceptance is less consistent here than on the Sofia metro.

None of this is a scam; it's just two companies sharing a route. But the price difference is real, and knowing which bus you're on is worth the few seconds it takes to check.

🏖️ Going Straight to a Resort

Most people landing at Varna aren't staying in Varna — they're heading for the northern coast. The good news is that 409 handles most of it:

• Sts. Constantine and Helena — on the 409 route, ~30 minutes
• Golden Sands — on the 409 route, ~50 minutes
• Albena — not on 409; change in Varna or at Golden Sands, or take a taxi
• Balchik and Kavarna — change at Varna bus station

🚕 Taxis — Reasonable, With the Usual Caution

A taxi into central Varna runs roughly €10–15, more to the northern resorts. That's fair value for a group or a late arrival.

The same rules apply as at any Bulgarian airport:

• Use the official taxi rank outside the terminal.
• Don't accept a ride from someone who approaches you inside the building.
• Check the per-kilometre rate printed on the car window before you get in — it should be clearly displayed.
• Make sure the meter is running from the start.

Varna has less of a reputation for airport taxi trouble than Sofia, but the precautions cost nothing.

🔁 Getting Back to the Airport

The return leg catches people out more than the arrival, because the timings work against you.

• Bus 409 runs the same route in reverse, so you can pick it up in central Varna or anywhere along the Golden Sands corridor.
• Allow generously in summer. The coast road through Sts. Constantine and Helena gets congested in July and August, and a 50-minute run from Golden Sands can stretch well past an hour. For a morning flight out of Golden Sands, budget 90 minutes door to gate rather than the timetable figure.
• The last bus is around 23:00. For an early-morning departure — common with budget carriers — the bus simply isn't running. Arrange a taxi the night before rather than hoping.
• Ask your hotel. Most resort hotels will book an airport taxi at a fixed price, which is usually the least stressful option for a dawn flight.

🌦️ Off-Season: Expect Less

Varna is a summer airport, and the whole transport picture thins out between roughly November and April:

• Bus 409 still runs, but less frequently — closer to every 30 minutes than every 15.
• Many resort hotels close entirely, so Golden Sands and Sts. Constantine and Helena are very quiet.
• Flight schedules shrink sharply; several summer routes don't operate at all.

None of this is a problem if you're heading into Varna city, which functions year-round and is a genuinely pleasant winter destination. It matters if you're expecting a resort to be open.

✈️ A Note on Which Airport to Fly Into

If you're still booking, it's worth knowing that Varna and Burgas serve different halves of the coast. Varna is the gateway to the northern resorts — Golden Sands, Albena, Balchik. Burgas serves the south — Sunny Beach, Nessebar, Sozopol.
