Nestled along the banks of the Danube River, just 16 km west of Silistra, Srebarna Biosphere Reserve stands as one of the most famous and ecologically significant freshwater wetlands in the world. Spanning nearly 900 hectares around Lake Srebarna, the reserve sits directly along Via Pontica—the second largest bird migration route in Europe.

Rich History & International Protection

The incredible birdlife of Srebarna has fascinated naturalists since the 19th century, drawing famous explorers like Felix Kanitz, Eduard Hodek, and Aleksi Petrov. After surviving dark periods of overhunting in the early 20th century, Srebarna emerged as a global model for wetland conservation:

  • 1948: Designated a Bulgarian nature reserve.
  • 1975: Added to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance.
  • 1977: Declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
  • 1983: Inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

Flora and Fauna: Haven for the Dalmatian Pelican

Dense reed beds cover nearly two-thirds of the reserve, providing a safe breeding sanctuary for a breathtaking diversity of wildlife:

  • Avian Sanctuary: Over 221 bird species inhabit Srebarna. Its crowning glory is the nesting colony of the rare Dalmatian Pelican. It also hosts Bulgaria's only native nesting site of the Great White Egret, alongside White Pelicans, Pygmy Cormorants, Glossy Ibises, Spoonbills, Mute Swans, and Ferruginous Ducks.
  • Diverse Wildlife: The reserve shelters 41 mammal species (including otters and European wildcats), 11 reptile species, 10 amphibian species, and 24 fish species.

Natural History Museum & Eco-Trails

Visitors can experience the reserve's unique ecosystem through well-developed visitor facilities:

  • Live Birdcam: A high-definition camera positioned right in the center of the pelican nesting colony streams live video and sound directly onto screens inside the museum.
  • Eco-Trail & Observation Platforms: A picturesque walking trail circles parts of the reserve, featuring covered gazebos and scenic birdwatching platforms overlooking the lake.
