The Voynovo rock monastery lies in the dry valley of the Taban river by the village of Voynovo, Kaynardzha municipality, Silistra province. It is not on the Danube but in southern Dobrudzha, in the canyon-like Taban valley.
The rocks at Voynovo are the northernmost of five rock sanctuaries along the Taban. Together they form a Thracian cult centre that arose around the 6th century BC. The sanctuary was abandoned in the 4th century AD, as Christianity took hold in the region. Thracian and Roman pottery has been found in the cave and rock shelter at its foot.
High in the rocks you can see trapezoid openings. According to archaeologists these are hermits' cells: rooms with niches for food, hollows carved for candles, hearths and stone beds. In the First Bulgarian Kingdom, Old Bulgarian monks lived in the cave north of the sanctuary and left drawings and graffiti on the rock.
There are more rock sites along the Taban valley, and Srebarna and Silistra are about an hour away by car.
