Rudozem is a small town in Smolyan province with 3,091 inhabitants (NSI, end of 2025), in the Arda valley in the Western Rhodopes, at about 700 m. It lies 26 km from Smolyan, 14 km from Madan and 40 km from Zlatograd, close to the Greek border.
On the second-class road II-86 Plovdiv – Smolyan – Rudozem–Xanthi border crossing: about 120 km from Plovdiv and 260 km from Sofia. To the south the road continues to Xanthi in Greece.
The settlement appears as Palas in Ottoman documents of 1676. It became part of Bulgaria under the Treaty of Bucharest in 1913 and was renamed Rudozem in 1934. After 1945 lead and zinc mining turned it from a village into a town of over 10,000 people by the 1980s. After production declined in the 1990s the population fell more than threefold.
