Sokolski Monastery

Perched near the Sokolova Cave along the upper course of the Yantra River, the Sokolski Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God (also known as the Gabrovo-Sokolski Monastery) is one of Bulgaria's most enchanting active nunneries. Tucked into the northern slopes of the Balkan Mountains, it is located just 4 km south of the Etar Open Air Museum and 12 km southeast of Gabrovo. Founding & Architectural Masterpieces The monastery was established in early 1833 by Archimandrite Yosif Sokolski, a prominent figure in the struggle for Bulgarian church autonomy, who arrived from the Troyan Monastery alongside Hieromonk Agapius. - The Main Church: Built by the renowned master builder Konstantin of Peshtera and consecrated in 1834, the church features vibrant frescoes by Father Pavel Zograf and his son Nikola (1862), an intricate Tryavna School iconostas, and an icon donated by the famed Gabrovo painter Hristo Tsokev. - Kolyu Ficheto's Fountain: In the monastery's cobblestone courtyard stands the famous eight-spouted stone fountain carved in 1868 by Master Kolyu Ficheto, decorated with falcon motifs. It remains an iconic architectural landmark. - St. Annunciation Chapel: After the destruction of the Gabrovo Convent by the communist regime in 1959, the nuns relocated to Sokolski Monastery. The chapel houses a preserved iconostas and rare icons of Jesus Christ and The Virgin Mary with Child painted by the legendary Zachari Zograf. Revolutionary Legacy Sokolski Monastery played a pivotal role in the Bulgarian national liberation movement: - Safe Haven: The monastery offered sanctuary to national heroes like Vasil Levski and Neofit Bozveli, who taught at the school established here in 1836. - The April Uprising (1876): The monastery served as a gathering point for Captain Dyado Nikola's detachment in 1856 and later for Tsanko Dyustabanov's rebels during the 1876 April Uprising. Following the uprising's suppression, eight freedom fighters were executed along the monastery cliffs. - Field Hospital: During the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878), the complex functioned as a crucial field hospital.
