Saint Nicholas Peak (1,326 m) is one of the most sacred sites in Bulgarian history. Located in the Shipka part of the Balkan Mountains, it was the stage for the decisive battles of the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878). Today, the peak is crowned by the majestic Monument to Liberty, commemorating the heroism of Russian soldiers and Bulgarian volunteers (Opalchentsi) who defended the mountain pass. The Mystery of the Names – St. Nicholas or Shipka? A curious historical fact is the shifting names of the peak, which often puzzles visitors: - Saint Nicholas: The original name of the peak where the monument stands. - Stoletov: Renamed in 1951 after General Nikolai Stoletov, who led the defense. - Shipka: In 1977, the peak was officially renamed "Shipka Peak." However, "Shipka" is also the name of the neighboring, lower peak (1,232 m) to the north. Consequently, since 1977, two adjacent peaks have shared the same name. The Epic of Shipka (August 1877) In August 1877, General Stoletov organized the defense of the pass, placing his troops at the strategic positions of St. Nicholas, Orlovo Gnezdo (Eagle’s Nest), and Shipka Peak. The most intense battles occurred between August 21 and 26. Despite being heavily outnumbered by Suleiman Pasha's forces, the defenders successfully held the pass, securing the path to Bulgarian independence. The Monument to Liberty Unveiled in 1934, the monument is an architectural masterpiece: - Structure: 31.5 meters high, built of dolomite stone, designed to resemble a medieval Bulgarian fortress tower. - Symbolism: A massive bronze lion (8 meters long) stands above the entrance, and the ground floor houses a marble sarcophagus containing the remains of the fallen heroes. - The Museum: Seven floors inside the tower feature an extensive collection of flags, weapons, and personal items from the battlefield. The top observation deck offers a stunning 360-degree view of both Northern and Southern Bulgaria.
