Bulgarka Nature Park

Nestled along the northern slopes of the Central and Eastern Balkan Mountains, Bulgarka Nature Park is a serene haven of pristine nature and deep-rooted Bulgarian history. Spanning nearly 21,800 hectares across the municipalities of Gabrovo and Tryavna, the park marks the dramatic transition from the steep alpine peaks of the Central Balkan to the rolling hills further east. It is also the sanctuary where the springs of the Yantra River and its main tributaries originate. Protected Ancient Beech Forests Established as a protected nature park in 2002, Bulgarka was created primarily to safeguard the unique beech forest ecosystems characteristic of the Balkan Range. Over 80% of the park's total area is covered by dense woodlands dominated by century-old European beech (accounting for 65% of all trees), alongside oak, hornbeam, linden, maple, and wild cherry. Conifers such as Scots pine, Black pine, and spruce also thrive here. The crown jewel of the park’s flora is a rare natural Yew habitat in the "Izvora" area. This unique site forms an exceptional three-tiered forest habitat of beech, yew, and cherry laurel—a conservation treasure found nowhere else in Europe. Remarkable Biodiversity and Wildlife Despite being one of the youngest protected parks in Bulgaria, Bulgarka holds an extraordinarily rich ecosystem: - Flora & Medicinal Herbs: Over 360 plant species have been identified, 31 of which are listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria (including European yew, Rhodope Haberlea, Belladonna, and rare wild orchids). Remarkably, nearly 70% of all officially recognized medicinal herbs in Bulgaria grow within the park. - Fauna: The vast forests shelter large mammals such as brown bears, wolves, red deer, roe deer, wild boars, and badgers. - Birdlife & Reptiles: The skies are home to golden eagles, buzzards, and falcons, while the forest floor provides sanctuary for rare lizard species, salamanders, and newts. Protected Areas & Natural Landmarks Nature enthusiasts visiting the park should not miss its most famous natural wonders, which harbor rare and endangered species: - Natural Landmarks: "Mahnatite Skali" (Mossy Rocks) and "Vikanata Skala" (Echo Rock). - Protected Sites: "Natural Yew Reserve in Izvora", "Makhchenitsa – Yovovtsi", and "Stolishta".
