Nestled against the dramatic sheer limestone cliffs of the Iskar Gorge, right along the banks of the Iskar River and near Cherepish Train Station, Cherepish Monastery stands as one of Bulgaria's most picturesque and historic monastic complexes. Recognized as a National Cultural Monument, it captivates travelers with its rich spiritual heritage, literary connections, and breathtaking natural scenery.

History Dating to the Second Bulgarian Empire

According to historical records and monastic charters dating back to 1390–1398, the monastery was founded during the reign of Tsar Ivan Shishman (1371–1393). Although destroyed multiple times during the Ottoman conquest, local villagers repeatedly rebuilt the holy sanctuary, culminating in a major restoration in 1660.

Throughout the centuries, Cherepish Monastery functioned as a vital educational and revolutionary hub:

  • Center of Literacy & Faith: Prominent Bulgarian enlightenment figures like St. Sofroniy of Vratsa found refuge here. Over the years, the complex housed a priest school, a theological institute, and the Sofia Theological Seminary.
  • Revolutionary Heritage: Secret meetings of local revolutionary committees were held within its walls. The two-story bone vault (built in 1784), adjacent to the Chapel of St. John the Baptist, houses the revered remains of fallen freedom fighters from Hristo Botev's detachment.

Literary Inspiration for Vazov, Aleko & Felix Kanitz

The enchanting setting where white cliffs overhang the winding river has inspired Bulgaria's greatest literary and historical figures:

  • Ivan Vazov: The patriarch of Bulgarian literature penned his famous short story A Bulgarian Woman while staying here. Visitors can still stand on "Vazov's Favorite Terrace," which overlooks the river gorge.
  • Aleko Konstantinov & Felix Kanitz: Famed author Aleko Konstantinov marvelled at the monastery's setting in his travelogues, while renowned Austro-Hungarian explorer Felix Kanitz famously dubbed it "The Most Beautiful Place."

Architecture & Sacral Art

The current monastery buildings date primarily from the 19th century, featuring carefully restored heritage wings, including the Bishop's Building, School Building, and Rushid's House.

  • Main Church: A single-nave vaulted structure topped by a spire dome. Its interior shelters a finely carved wooden iconostas and an embroidered shroud from 1844. The icons were crafted by master painters from the Tryavna School, with additional early 20th-century frescoes by Debar master Velko Iliev.
