Bacho Kiro Cave is one of the most significant and globally renowned archaeological and karst landmarks in Bulgaria. Situated in the picturesque Pre-Balkan region within the Dryanovo municipality, it rises from a sheer limestone cliff at 335 meters above sea level. Designated as a natural landmark in 1962, it holds the prestigious title of being the very first developed tourist cave in the country (back in 1937). The site is featured under number 22 in the 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria and is located just 300 meters west of the grand Dryanovo Monastery, close to the water cave of Andaka. Prehistoric Sensations and Paleolithic Discoveries - Europe’s Oldest Human Remains: Recent cutting-edge scientific research combining high-precision radiocarbon dating with protein and DNA analysis shows that hominin remains found inside Bacho Kiro date back approximately 47,000 years. Belonging to our own species, Homo sapiens, this discovery firmly establishes the site as the earliest known evidence of modern human existence in Europe, from an era when the continent was still populated by Neanderthals. - The Entrance Hall (Preddverieto): This is the most extensively excavated hall by archaeologists. It contains ancient tools and traces of intense human habitation spanning from the Middle Paleolithic (70,000–50,000 BC) to the Late Paleolithic (43,000–26,000 BC). - Extinct Megafauna: Excavations have unearthed a vast collection of wild animal bones, including a perfectly preserved, massive skeleton of a prehistoric cave bear that stood an impressive 3 meters tall. Karst Formations, Mysticism, and the Purgatory - Natural Sculptures: Formed over millennia by the underground waters of the Andaka River, the cave features an exceptional variety of stalagmites, stalactites, columns, and stone draperies. Many karst formations naturally resemble shapes of fish, snakes, bears, people, and a beautiful figure known as the Madonna and Child. - Climate: The cave interior maintains a constant year-round temperature of 13 degrees Celsius and a high humidity level of 95 percent. - The Purgatory Challenge: A main tourist attraction along the path is Chistilishteto (The Purgatory)—a very low, narrow rock corridor measuring just 60 by 40 centimeters. According to a local traditional belief, only a completely righteous person free of sin can successfully squeeze through this passage. The Unique Bat Colony The cave is a highly vital habitat and a protected zone for bat conservation in the region. Direct observations have recorded four distinct species utilizing the galleries: - Greater horseshoe bat - Lesser horseshoe bat - Mediterranean horseshoe bat - Natterers bat Bacho Kiro serves as a critical winter roosting site. From December through late March, an average of over 100 individuals of the Greater and Lesser horseshoe bats safely hibernate inside its dark, undisturbed deep chambers.
