The Trigrad Gorge is one of the most majestic, awe-inspiring, and picturesque canyon formations in Bulgaria, located in the heart of the Western Rhodope Mountains within the Devin Municipality. This grand gorge was naturally carved into ancient karstified marbles by the Trigrad River. While the entire gorge spans about 7 km, its most spectacular and narrow section stretches for 2–3 km. Here, the riverbed narrows to just 100–300 meters, flanked by sheer, vertical limestone cliffs. The western wall rises to an impressive 180 meters, while the eastern wall reaches a staggering height of 300–350 meters. In terms of scale, the Trigrad Gorge ranks as the third longest in Bulgaria, following only the Buynovo and Tran Gorges. To preserve the rare endemic plant and animal species and their unique habitats, the area was officially declared a protected territory in 1963. The gorge is a prominent highlight of the "100 National Tourist Sites" national challenge (under No. 87), with the official stamp available at the nearby Trigradski Skali Hut or inside the Devil's Throat Cave. The area boasts several world-class adventure landmarks: - The Devil's Throat Cave: Located on the western slope, this legendary cave is the gorge's main attraction. Here, the Trigrad River plunges underground into a massive abyss, creating the highest underground waterfall in the Balkans (42 meters), before resurfacing 530 meters further down as a powerful karst spring. - Haramijska Cave: Situated high up on the sheer eastern cliffs, this wild cave is a popular spot for extreme tourism, accessible only with climbing gear and professional guides. - The Bear Museum: Located near the Trigradski Skali Hut, just 500 meters before entering the narrowest section of the canyon. Traveling through the Trigrad Gorge is an adventure in itself. A very narrow, single-lane asphalt road winds along the bottom of the canyon, carved directly into the overhanging cliffs. Because passing other vehicles requires extreme caution and utilizing small, designated widening pockets along the rock walls, the drive is a thrilling and unforgettable experience. This scenic route also serves as the only vital physical connection linking the remote mountain villages of Trigrad, Vodni Pad, Zhrebevo, and Kesten to the rest of the country.
