Tucked into the sheer vertical limestone wall of the Lakatnik Rocks in the Western Balkan Mountains, Temnata Dupka Cave ("The Dark Hole", historically known as Suhodolski Podmol) is one of Bulgaria's most celebrated and complex underground cave systems. Situated 27 meters above the Iskar River near the village of Milanovo, it is officially protected as a Natural Landmark. Carved into dark Middle Triassic limestone, the cave forms a vast, intricate labyrinth of galleries, subterranean rivers, cascades, siphons, and crystal-clear underground lakes. The Underground World: Chambers, Lakes & Waterfalls Temnata Dupka features 4 distinct subterranean stories (excluding a lower, unexplored active stream channel) structured around two main primary galleries branching off into dozens of side passages. The subterranean waters have sculpted a remarkable underground landscape: - Subterranean Lakes: The cave harbors a chain of underground lakes, including Zhekovo Lake, Hidden Lake, Gloomy Lake, Radevo Lake, and Friendship Lake. Many reach depths of up to 3 meters and are interconnected through sumps. - Waterfalls & Hydrology: The cave features underground waterfalls like Praskaloto. The cave's entire water volume drains into the famous Zhitolyub Karst Spring at the base of the cliffs. During heavy rainstorms and spring snowmelt, water levels rise rapidly, occasionally causing the underground river to gush directly out of the main cave entrance. - Galleries & Formations: Passage styles range from towering canyons (Water Gallery, Spring Gallery) to Trapezariyata ("The Dining Room"), an extraordinarily decorated high chamber adorned with thick reddish-brown sinter dams and calcic flowstones. The Cradle of Bulgarian Speleology Temnata Dupka holds iconic status in Bulgarian outdoor heritage, affectionately dubbed "the training ground for Sofia's speleologists." Generations of Bulgarian cavers have honed their technical navigation skills within its multi-level maze. The cave also harbors a delicate and unique bio-speleological ecosystem. Useful Visitor Information - Location: Iskar Gorge, Svoge Municipality, set in the Lakatnik Rocks directly above the Zhitolyub spring (near Lakatnik Train Station). - Access Status: Although equipped with an entrance gate, it remains unlocked. The cave is unilluminated and wild (not a tourist show cave). - Safety Warning: Because Temnata Dupka is a complex, hazardous labyrinth with deep vertical drops, narrow muddy squeezes, sumps, and flash-flood risks during rainy periods, entering beyond the threshold without professional caving equipment, helmets, primary/backup lighting, and an experienced speleological guide is strictly unsafe.
