Svezhen is a near-abandoned village on the southern slopes of the Sredna Gora mountains, in Brezovo Municipality, Plovdiv Province. Under its old name Adzhar it was one of the wealthiest settlements in the range — a centre of crafts and trade, with schools and a church built at a scale that makes no sense beside today's handful of permanent residents. It was burned during the Russo-Turkish war of 1877–78 and, unlike the villages that rebuilt, it never got its people back. What survives is an architectural reserve: stone-and-timber National Revival houses along steep cobbled lanes, some carefully restored by returning families and new owners, others standing open to the sky. There is no ticket office and no interpreted museum route. That half-restored, half-collapsed texture — and the silence that comes with it — is what people drive up here for. The village is also the trailhead for the marked forest walk up to Svezhen hut, an hour to an hour and a half each way through beech and oak, and a common starting point for longer routes towards Bogdan Peak, the highest summit in Sredna Gora. The approach is from Plovdiv via Rakovski and Brezovo — around 65 km, with the final climb from Brezovo on narrow asphalt in mixed condition. There is no practical public transport, no cash machine, and no restaurant that can be relied on to be open, so visitors should arrive self-sufficient. Late September to early November, when the forest turns, is the best time to come.
