Studen Kladenets Reservoir (meaning "Cold Well") is one of the largest, most strategic, and visually stunning artificial lakes in Bulgaria. Situated along the middle course of the Arda River, just southeast of the city of Kardzhali, it serves as a crucial link in the "Arda Cascade" hydro-energy system managed by the National Electricity Company. Spanning an impressive surface area of 27.8 sq. km, Studen Kladenets ranks as the third-largest reservoir in Bulgaria, surpassed only by the Mandra and Iskar reservoirs. Preparations for this major engineering milestone began in 1954, and actual construction launched the following year. Building the massive dam wall proved to be a daunting task, facing numerous challenges and setbacks due to the sudden and violent seasonal flooding of the untamed Arda River. The hydro-junction was successfully completed and officially inaugurated on June 15, 1958. During the filling of the reservoir, the former village of Darets was entirely submerged, and its residents were relocated. The primary purpose of the dam is to regulate the highly fluctuating seasonal flow of the Arda River, supply water for agricultural irrigation, and generate clean electricity via the Studen Kladenets Hydroelectric Power Plant. Today, the reservoir is a highly attractive destination for eco-tourism, water sports, and fishing. Its vast, mirror-like waters are actively used for rowing, boating, kayaking, and commercial fish farming. The region surrounding Studen Kladenets is also a true sanctuary for wildlife and birdwatchers. In recent years, the quiet, sheltered bays of the reservoir have become an essential resting and feeding stopover for rare Great White Pelicans (Pelecanus onocrotalus) during their majestic autumn migration to the south. A major part of the reservoir's charm lies in its unique geography. Its waters stretch across the borders of four municipalities — Kardzhali, Momchilgrad, Krumovgrad, and Stambolovo, bordering dozens of picturesque local villages. One of the most famous and romantic spots in the area is the village of Lisitsite on the reservoir's edge, which remains completely cut off from roads and is accessible only by boat or via Bulgaria's longest pedestrian suspension bridge, offering travelers an authentic escape into nature.
