Regional Historical Museum - Vratsa

Positioned in the central plaza of Vratsa right beneath the sheer cliffs of the Vratsa Balkan Range, the Regional History Museum of Vratsa ranks among Bulgaria's most prestigeous cultural institutions. Established in 1953, it is housed in one of the very few purpose-built museum edifices erected in the country.

Featured on the official 100 Tourist Sites of Bulgaria registry, the museum safeguards priceless archaeological masterpieces ranging from prehistoric eras to modern Bulgarian history.

The museum features 10 specialized departments structured chronologically:

• Prehistory: Highlights the earliest human habitations in Northwestern Bulgaria, featuring rare Paleolithic tools and Neolithic ceramics.
• The Thracian Kingdom of Triballi: The absolute pinnacle of the museum. A specially secured vault displays the Rogozen Treasure—the largest Thracian silver hoard ever discovered, comprising 155 silver and gilded phialai and jugs.
• Mogilanska Mound Relics: Displays gold artifacts excavated from a royal Thracian tomb in downtown Vratsa, including a solid gold laurel wreath, exquisite golden earrings, and ceremonial armor dating to the 4th century BC.
• Medieval & National Revival Eras: Exhibits chronicling Vratsa during the First and Second Bulgarian Empires, alongside documents detailing the 19th-century struggle for church independence.
• Hristo Botev & His Detachment: A comprehensive exhibition detailing the heroic 1876 march of revolutionary leader Hristo Botev and his freedom fighters from Kozloduy to the Vratsa Mountains.
• Ivan Funev Art Gallery: Integrated within the museum complex, housing fine collections of classical and contemporary Bulgarian sculpture, painting, and graphics.
