Raysko Praskalo (translated as "Heavenly Spray") is one of the most majestic and inspiring natural wonders in Bulgaria. Soaring to an impressive height of 124.5 meters, it holds the prestigious title of the highest permanently flowing waterfall on the Balkan Peninsula. Nestled deep within the Balkan Mountains, it cascades down the steep southern slope right beneath the highest summit of the range, Botev Peak. The waterfall is located within the strict boundaries of the Dzhendema Nature Reserve, a core part of the Central Balkan National Park. Recognizing its outstanding ecological and aesthetic value, the state officially declared Raysko Praskalo a protected natural landmark in 1965. This spectacular natural phenomenon is formed by the pristine waters of the Praskalsка River. The river's flow is continuously sustained by a permanent snow patch situated just below Botev Peak, which resists the summer heat and never melts completely. After winding its way through the gentle, lush grassy meadows near the summit, the stream reaches the upper edge of a monumental wall of vertical cliffs known as the Rayski Skali (Heavenly Rocks). It is from this dramatic precipice that the river takes its breathtaking leap into the abyss of Southern Dzhendema, eventually joining the waters of the Byala Reka River. The waterfall is sometimes mistakenly called Kalofersko Praskalo (The Great Dzhendema Waterfall), which is indeed another massive waterfall (120 m) located nearby, but it sits on a different river and remains exceptionally wild and nearly inaccessible. The primary gateway and resting base for exploring this natural wonder is the iconic Rays (Heaven) Chalet, situated just a short hike away from the base of the cascade. The surrounding landscape is renowned for its untouched, rugged, and pristine alpine beauty, which has successfully preserved its authentic character despite welcoming thousands of hikers each year. The sheer vertical drop of the Heavenly Rocks also serves as a legendary arena for the Bulgarian climbing community, offering some of the most technical and rewarding alpine climbing routes in the country. The trek to the waterfall winds through scenic beech forests and panoramic mountain ridges, making it an essential destination for any outdoor enthusiast.
