Tarzan Trail

Botev Peak (2376 m) is the highest summit of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina), and climbing it via Tarzan’s Trail (Tarzanova Pateka) is a bucket-list adventure for hikers. Starting from the lush meadows above Kalofer and passing by the magnificent Raysko Praskalo (the highest waterfall in the Balkans), this route offers a dramatic ascent filled with stunning views and alpine thrills.

Logistics and Starting Point

Starting Point: Panitsite area (above the town of Kalofer). Accessible by car or taxi; a 1.5-hour walk from Kalofer city center.

• Route: Panitsite – Rai Hut (blue markings) – Tarzan’s Trail – Botev Peak (green markings).
• Duration: Approximately 8 hours for the round trip. A sunrise start is highly recommended for one-day hikers.
• Elevation Gain: A demanding trek with nearly 2,000 meters of cumulative ascent.

Is Tarzan’s Trail Dangerous?

The trail is named after its trailblazer, Todor Bozhkov (nicknamed Tarzan), who mapped the route in 1941.

• Terrain: The steepest sections are equipped with steel cables (handrails) for support.
• Technicality: For seasoned hikers, the cables are more of a convenience than a necessity. While not as exposed as "Koncheto" in Pirin, it can be intimidating for those with a fear of heights.
• Weather Conditions: In dry weather, the trail is safe for fit hikers. However, during rain, ice, or fog, the rocky terrain becomes slippery and significantly more dangerous.

Essential Tips

• Water: The last reliable water fountain is at Rai Hut. Bottled water is available for purchase at the tourist shelter on the summit.
• Gear: Sturdy hiking boots with excellent grip are mandatory, as the terrain becomes predominantly rocky after leaving the hut.
• Climate Warning: Botev Peak is notorious for its unpredictable weather, sudden fogs, and fierce winds. Always check the forecast before heading up.
