Tucked away in the southwestern slopes of Vitosha Mountain near the village of Bosnek (Pernik Municipality), Duhlata Cave (also known as Bosneshka Cave) stands as one of the most intriguing and complex underground systems in Bulgaria. Spanning an impressive length of over 17,600 meters and a depth of 53 meters, it ranks among the longest cave labyrinths in the country.
The cave owes its unique name to the whistling sound created by air currents rushing through its narrow entrance ("duha" meaning "blowing" in Bulgarian).
Carved out by the subterranean currents of the Struma River over thousands of years, Duhlata features an intricate multi-level maze spread across 6 distinct subterranean stories. Its interior harbors a dense network of passages, galleries, crystal-clear sinter lakes, underground waterfalls, and delicate speleothems.
Despite its pitch-black environment, Duhlata harbors a surprisingly rich ecosystem. Scientists have identified 22 species of cave-dwelling animals within its galleries, including 6 protected bat species that utilize the cave for roosting and winter hibernation.
Recognizing its extraordinary geological value and fragile underground ecosystems, Duhlata was officially designated a Natural Landmark in 1962.
Because the cave is an extremely dangerous and complex labyrinth—with narrow squeezes and a high risk of flash flooding during rainstorms—entry is strictly regulated and permitted only for certified speleologists with professional gear.
