Little Musala, though often overshadowed by its more famous neighbor – the highest peak Musala, is an independent and exceptionally picturesque peak in the Rila Mountains, located in the heart of the Musala massif. Standing at 2902 meters, it is the second-highest peak in Bulgaria and part of the Musala Ridge, offering unparalleled panoramas of the vast Rila peaks and valleys. The ascent to Little Musala is a challenge that is worth every step. The most popular route starts from Borovets resort, passes through Musala Hut and Ledeno Ezero (Icy Lake) Shelter, following the well-marked trail towards the main peak. It is precisely from the ridge between Little Musala and Musala that some of the most impressive views unfold, revealing deep cirques, sparkling lakes like the Musala Lakes, and the vast stone seas of Rila. The terrain is typically high-alpine – predominantly rocky, with sparse alpine grasses and mosses, and a raw beauty that captivates year-round. In summer, you might encounter wild goats and various species of high-mountain birds here. The peak is an ideal destination for experienced hikers seeking breathtaking landscapes and a sense of freedom above the clouds. A visit is best planned for July, August, or early September when the snow has melted and the weather is more stable. Do not forget appropriate high-mountain gear, as conditions can change rapidly. Little Musala offers not just an an ascent, but an immersion into the wild beauty of Rila, leaving unforgettable memories and a thirst for more mountain adventures.
