The Kalofer Monastery of the Nativity of the Mother of God is an active male monastery that holds a significant place in the spiritual landscape of the region. The sanctuary is situated about 7 km north of the sub-Balkan town of Kalofer, nestled in a remarkably picturesque valley on the banks of the pristine Byala Reka River. Surrounded by the rolling ridges of the Balkan Mountains, the monastery offers a perfect haven of peace and solitude. Just 200 meters above the complex begins the beautiful territory of the Central Balkan National Park. The location serves as an excellent gateway for eco-tourism, as the popular Byala Reka Complex is located nearby, featuring a scenic eco-trail, an organized campsite, and the Dzhendema nature survival center for children. The history of the monastery is long, turbulent, and marked by great resilience. Founded back in 1640, the cloister was later completely destroyed during the Ottoman rule. It was revived and rebuilt in 1819, once again becoming a vital spiritual center for the local population. During the Russo-Turkish Liberation War (1877 – 1878), when Russian troops temporarily retreated, the Kalofer Monastery shared the tragic fate of the town and was burned to the ground by Ottoman forces. Driven by deep faith, the community managed to rebuild the sanctuary as early as 1881. The monastery obtained its current look during a major reconstruction between 1981 and 1984, when the entire complex was rebuilt from its foundations and supplied with fresh running water to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the Bulgarian State. Today, the monastery complex attracts both pilgrims and art lovers alike. The interior of the church was beautifully adorned with frescoes in 2003 by the talented Bulgarian painters Mihail Minkov from Plovdiv and Nanko Nankov from Shumen, transforming the sacred space into a stunning display of Orthodox art. The monastery also features a secluded nearby skete dedicated to the Protection of the Mother of God. The most vibrant time to visit the holy site is on September 8th, when the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary is celebrated. This marks the official patronal feast of the monastery, drawing believers from all over the country for solemn services and traditional blessings.
