The Womb Cave, also known by its local name Tangardak Kaya, is one of the most extraordinary Thracian rock sanctuaries in Bulgaria. Located in the Rhodope Mountains, approximately 12 km from the town of Kardzhali near the village of Ilinitsa, this site is a unique fusion of a natural karst fissure and precise prehistoric craftsmanship. It was shaped to resemble a womb, symbolizing the ancient cult of the Mother Goddess and the rebirth of life. Astronomy and Rituals The sanctuary is ingeniously designed so that every day at high noon, a solar ray enters through a crack in the ceiling. - The Sacred Marriage: Depending on the sun's position, the light takes the shape of a phallus moving toward the altar at the back of the cave. When the beam reaches the altar (typically during the winter solstice), it signifies the symbolic impregnation of the Mother Goddess by the Sun God. - Acoustics: The name "Tangardak Kaya" translates to "The Thundering Rock." Due to a hemispherical dome carved inside, the cave possesses unique acoustic properties that resonate only with low-pitched male voices, producing a sound akin to thunder. Discovery and Archaeology Although local shepherds had known of its existence for generations, the cave was officially introduced to the archaeological community in 2002 by speleologist Mincho Gumarov and subsequently studied by Prof. Nikolay Ovcharov. Near the entrance, visitors can see trapezoidal niches carved into the cliffs, typical of the sacred sites in this region dating back to the Chalcolithic and Bronze Ages. Practical Information - Location: Tangardak Kaya area, near the villages of Ilinitsa and Nenkovo. - Access: An eco-trail leads to the cave, requiring about an hour of hiking uphill. The path is well-marked and features several rest areas and gazebos. - Dimensions: Entrance height 3 m, width 2.5 m, and a total depth of 22 m. - Tip: The best time to visit is around noon to witness the dramatic light phenomenon inside the cave.
