Bashevo - Krivus fortress

Krivus Fortress is a medieval stronghold perched on an inaccessible rocky ridge above the Arda River. Located just 1.5 km from the village of Bashevo, it is famous for having one of the best-preserved citadels in Bulgaria. Built in the 10th century, it played a vital defensive role and was mentioned by the Byzantine chronicler George Akropolites. Architecture and Strategic Location The fortress stands 140 meters above the river bed, naturally protected by steep cliffs and the river’s curves. - The Citadel: Located on the highest eastern peak, the citadel perfectly blocks access to the rest of the ridge. The entrance is guarded by a massive rectangular tower that remains largely intact. - Fortification: The walls are up to 2.5 meters thick. To the north, the wall is preserved in its full height, complete with a battle platform and crenelations. - The Secret Tunnel: According to local legends, the fortress was supplied with water from the river via a secret underground tunnel—a remarkable feat of medieval engineering. Why Visit Krivus? Beyond its historical significance, the site offers breathtaking panoramic views. From the fortress walls, you can see the famous Arda meanders, the picturesque Bezdiven Peak, and the ruins of the neighboring Patmos Fortress overlooking the Kardzhali Reservoir.
