Snezhanka is the highest peak in the Pamporovo area and in the Bukova Planina ridge — 1926 metres, about 15 km from the town of Smolyan. It's also the most recognisable sight in the Central Rhodopes, though not for the summit itself: on the ridge stands a 156-metre television tower whose top reaches 2082 m above sea level. At 2019 metres inside it there's a panoramic café with a 360-degree view — one of the highest places in Bulgaria where you can sit down for a coffee.
The peak is one of the Hundred National Tourist Sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union. The stamp is available at the entrance to the television tower and at the Mountain Rescue Service station next to Studenets hut.
On a clear day the Rhodopes open up in every direction, and locals say that when visibility is genuinely good you can make out the Aegean Sea. Don't count on it — but it's worth a look south.
Getting to Snezhanka Peak
In winter, unless you're a keen winter hiker, the lifts are effectively the only way up. Four connections serve the peak:
Studenets hut is reachable via lifts 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7.
In summer access is easier. The most reliably running lines are Smolyan Lakes — Snezhanka and Studenets — Snezhanka. There's also an asphalt road to the top, which becomes part of the main ski area in winter. On top of that, a network of hiking and mountain-biking routes starts from the summit — Snezhanka makes a convenient trailhead for the whole area.
Check lift operating hours before you set out: they change by season, and between the winter and summer seasons there are stretches when some of the lifts don't run at all.
Climate and when to go
The average annual temperature at the summit is around 3.2 °C — roughly 12 °C in July and about –6 °C in January. Annual rainfall reaches 1200 mm, more than at Botev Peak in the Balkan Range or Cherni Vrah on Vitosha.
The figure that matters most for visitors is the wind: average speeds are relatively low (around 6 m/s), and combined with the high-mountain climate this lets snow cover hold from mid-November through to May — a large part of why Pamporovo has such a long ski season.
The practical takeaway: bring a jacket whatever the season. The only question is how thick. Even at the height of summer, 1926 metres is noticeably colder than Smolyan down in the valley.

Late spring through early autumn (May–September) is best for Snezhanka peak, when trails are clear of snow and weather is most stable. Higher peaks may hold snow into June and see fresh snow as early as October. Winter visits are for experienced mountaineers with proper gear.
