Stretching along the Svishtov-Belene Lowland, Persina Nature Park is the only nature park in Bulgaria dedicated specifically to preserving the unique wetland ecosystems along the Danube River. Spanning over 21,700 hectares (217 sq. km), the park encompasses the dramatic bluffs near Nikopol and Svishtov, as well as all Bulgarian Danubian islands in this stretch of the river. Wetland Conservation & International Recognition Persina was officially declared a protected nature park on December 4, 2000, with a clear primary mission: restoring and protecting vital freshwater wetlands and maintaining the wild, natural state of the river islands. The undisputed centerpiece of the park is the Belene Islands Complex (which includes Persin/Belene Island, the largest Bulgarian island on the Danube).
