The Neofit Rilski House Museum is the birthplace of the National Revival scholar Neofit Rilski (Nikola Benin) in central Bansko. It is known as the Benin House. It has been a museum since 1981 and is a cultural monument of national importance.
The museum has two parts — the authentically preserved house with an ethnographic display, and a documentary exhibition with Neofit Rilski’s letters, photographs and writings. On show are his "Bulgarian Grammar" of 1835, his unfinished Greek-Bulgarian dictionary and books from his library.
The ground floor holds the kitchen with a double oven, rooms for food and for kneading, and a two-part hiding place with a hearth. In the former animal room a mural by Todor Tsonev shows Neofit Rilski’s family tree. The living floor has the open gallery and the rooms. In one room, fitted out as a cell school, his father, the priest Petar, taught.
The house was built in the 18th century by the Benin family and is a typical Razlog-Chepino house — with a closed yard, a massive gate and a fortified stone core on the west side. In 1810 it was damaged by fire, then rebuilt and enlarged. It was restored in 1981, when it became a museum. Its collection holds over 400 documents and objects.
