The strict scientific reserve of Kongura is located in the picturesque northeastern part of the Belasitsa Mountain (Blagoevgrad region), spanning an impressive territory of 1,310.8 hectares, supported by a 285-hectare buffer zone. Established in 1988 (incorporating the historic "Skoshnik" reserve from 1954), its core mission is the total preservation of Bulgaria's unique, primary ecosystems of sweet chestnut and European beech. Due to its extraordinary scientific significance and outstanding biodiversity, Kongura—which since 2007 has been integrated into the Belasitsa Nature Park—justifiably ranks among the ten most valuable natural reserves in Bulgaria. Natural Features and Terrain - From Foothills to Alpine Ridge: The reserve is situated within the lands of the town of Petrich and develops across a stunning altitudinal range from 600 to 1,950 meters above sea level. - Kongur Peak: The highest and most panoramic point of the protected territory is the namesake Kongur Peak, rising proudly on the main mountain ridge. - Hydrology: The reserve encompasses a significant section of the watershed of the crisp Luda Mara River (also known as the Petrichka River), which feeds the surrounding valleys. Unique Old-Growth Forests and Endemic Flora - The 500-Year-Old Titans: Kongura is world-renowned for its pure, old-growth forests of sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa). The average age of the stands exceeds 200 years, while the oldest and most majestic specimens are over 500 years old. - Distinct Beech Communities: The beech forests within the reserve exhibit unique ecological parameters and floristic compositions that distinguish them significantly from beech woods found in other Bulgarian mountain ranges. - A Hub of Endemism: The territory protects 429 species of vascular plants. Among them are 11 rare and 1 critically endangered species, alongside 30 Balkan and 5 unique Bulgarian endemics that cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. - Fauna: A Sanctuary for Birds of Prey and Wilderness Dwellers - Mammals in the Wild: Thanks to strict protection regulations and the absence of human interference, the deep forests provide a safe haven for wild mammals such as roe deer, wild boar, European hare, red fox, and the elusive European pine marten. - An Avian Haven: Kongura serves as a vital nesting ground for rare birds. The craggy heights and dense canopy shelter legally protected predators like the golden eagle, northern goshawk, Levant sparrowhawk, and Eurasian hobby, alongside the impressive black woodpecker. - The Red Wood Ant: A highly characteristic feature of the reserve's ecosystem is the presence of massive, well-preserved mounds built by the red wood ant, which play a crucial role in maintaining the biological health of the ancient forest.
