The Adriana Budevska House Museum in the city of Dobrich is a unique cultural landmark dedicated to the life and heritage of one of Bulgarias greatest dramatic actresses. Adriana Budevska was a pioneer and a key founder of the professional national theater in Bulgaria during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. She spent her childhood years in this house, studying here until the fourth grade (until 1889), shaping her resilient character, and displaying her acting talent for the very first time. Today, this site is among the few house museums in Bulgaria dedicated to actors, and the only one honoring a creator from the golden generation that laid the foundations of the national stage. History of the House and its Transformation into a Museum The birthplace of the actress was constructed during the 19th century. By the early 1970s, the building had fallen into disrepair, prompting the city authorities to expropriate the property on January 26, 1973, to convert it into a museum. In 1976, the house was officially designated as an historical monument of culture of national importance. In connection with the 100th anniversary of Budevskas birth, extensive renovation works began, and the local Historical Museum prepared a permanent exhibition. The official opening of the house museum took place during a formal ceremony on December 11, 1978. The event was attended by the entire cast of the Adriana Budevska Drama Theater from Burgas, led by its director at the time, Nedyalko Yordanov. By 1980, the exhibition was fully completed, turning the site into one of the most attractive cultural hubs in the city. Emotional Gatherings and Commemorations Over the Years In December 1988, in the city then known as Tolbukhin (now Dobrich), a week-long celebration was organized to commemorate the 110th anniversary of the actresss birth. Her granddaughter, Adriana Gancheva, traveled specially from Argentina to attend the events, taking nasturtium seeds from her grandmothers yard back with her as a keepsake. Years later, her grandson Guillermo and his wife also traveled from Argentina to pay tribute to her memory at her birthplace. The museum successfully keeps the connection alive between generations and artistic institutions. On the occasion of the 125th anniversary of Budevskas birth, students, the staff of the Dobrich Historical Museum, and actors from the Burgas Drama Theater organized a formal visit to lay flowers at the memorial plaque. Restoration, Modern Concept, and New Exhibitions Following a long period during which the building was in critical condition and facing collapse, the Regional Historical Museum in Dobrich secured targeted funding from the Ministry of Culture for a full reconstruction based on authentic historical records. Supported by the Municipality of Dobrich, the house was completely restored and reinforced. In 2022, on the eve of World Theatre Day (March 27), the house museum opened its doors to the public once again. Today, visitors can explore two authentic museum room reconstructions that perfectly recreate the domestic atmosphere and spirit of the era. The personal and professional journey of the actress is showcased in an accessible manner through innovative museum books. These books tell the concise story of an inspiring woman who dedicated a quarter of a century to the Bulgarian stage. The current goal of the museum specialists is to develop this creative space into a laboratory for youth projects, educating the younger generation to appreciate true cultural values.
