Golden Sands Nature Park

Located just 17 km north of the coastal city of Varna, Golden Sands Nature Park is a serene natural sanctuary that pairs dense woodlands with sea breezes and rich historical heritage. Spanning 13.2 square kilometers along the slopes of the Franga Plateau, it holds the title of the smallest nature park in Bulgaria by area, as well as one of its oldest—originally declared a protected park back in 1943. Unique Terrain & Jungle-Like Dense Forests The park is characterized by a dramatic landslide-carved landscape featuring terraced hills and steep limestone cliffs. Rocky ridges at the historic Aladja Monastery, Chiplak Tepe (the highest point at 269.3 meters), and the White Wall slope gracefully toward the coast, revealing panoramic sea views. Despite its compact size, the park harbors over 500 species of higher plants across distinct ecosystems: - Dense Longoz-Type Forests: Located in lower, humid gullies, these forests feature European ash, flowering ash, linden, and hornbeam. Entwined by thick climbing vines (Hedera, Smilax, Clematis), they resemble natural temperate rain forests. - Ancient Oak Woodlands: Elevated areas in the center of the park showcase century-old oak stands of Turkey oak and Downy oak. The forest floor blossoms with rare wild orchids, snowdrops, and wood anemones. - Protected Flora: The park preserves 21 rare and endangered plant species, including the Caucasian primrose and the Bithynian squill. Wildlife Haven along Via Pontica Positioned directly along the major Via Pontica bird migration route, the park serves as a vital shelter for diverse wildlife: - Avian Sanctuary: The park hosts 88 bird species (50 of which nest year-round), including green woodpeckers, song thrushes, orioles, hoopoes, and hawfinches. - Mammals & Reptiles: Shelters 37 mammal species (including 10 bat species, roe deer, foxes, wild boars, and badgers) alongside protected reptiles like spur-thighed tortoises, the glass lizard, and Aesculapian snakes.
