The Old Dobrich Architectural and Ethnographic Complex is one of the most captivating cultural landmarks in Northeastern Bulgaria. Built in the very heart of the modern city, on the historic grounds of the former Odun Bazar and Un Bazar (the old wood and flour markets), the complex has spent over 40 years preserving, presenting, and developing traditional Dobrudzha crafts from the late 19th and the first half of the 20th centuries. The site keeps the memory of the economic past, lifestyle, and urban architecture of old Dobrich alive, transporting visitors straight into the atmosphere of a Bulgarian National Revival market town. The Living Bazaar and Craft Workshops - Authentic Technologies: Inside the restored old town bazaar, hereditary craftsmen breathe new life into traditional folklore culture. Working with ancient hand techniques and utilizing completely original tools, they proudly sustain the centuries-old artisan traditions of the region. - Variety of Trades: The complex features more than 20 active workshops. Visitors can watch live demonstrations of master craftsmen creating traditional products in pottery, blacksmithing, knifemaking, leatherworking, embroidery, weaving, icon painting, cooperator trade (barrel making), woodcarving, and goldsmithing. - The Old Clock Tower: Serving as a symbol of the complex and the historic town is the reconstructed old clock tower. The original structure was built in the 18th century, and its modern counterpart still marks the passing of time, bringing history back to life. Archaeology, Education, and the Interactive School Museum - Archaeology of Dobrudzha Exhibition: The main exhibition hall of the complex houses a rich permanent collection displaying valuable archaeological discoveries and historical layers from the ancient past of the Dobrudzha region. - The School Museum: This venue features a partial reconstruction of a traditional 19th-century Bulgarian National Revival classroom. It serves as a base for various educational programs, history workshops, and interactive lectures designed for students, young researchers, and both domestic and international tourists. Traditional Hospitality and Leisure To complete the historical journey, the architectural complex offers fantastic opportunities for culinary tourism and relaxation. Visitors can enjoy: - An authentic inn (han) and a traditional restaurant serving hearty Dobrudzha dishes prepared according to old local recipes. - A tavern and a local cafe, where guests can unwind amidst the cozy National Revival architecture and experience authentic local hospitality.
