Hubavets Hut is the first of three mountain chalets nestled in the picturesque valley of the Stara Reka River, followed by Balkanski Rozi Hut and Vasil Levski Hut. The trail leading to it from the town of Karlovo offers an engaging hike that transitions from the rolling foothills straight into the heart of the Balkan Mountains. Covering a distance of 5.75 km with an elevation gain of 479 meters (ascending from 483 m to 962 m above sea level), the hike takes around 2 hours to complete. Although the terrain is mostly rocky and rugged, the effort is well rewarded with stunning panoramic views, small cascading waterfalls, and beautiful river scenery. The route is safe with no dangerous sections, and fresh drinking water is accessible at the trailhead in Karlovo, at two spots along the river, and at the hut itself. The journey begins at the northern end of Vodopad (Waterfall) Pedestrian Street in Karlovo, where parking is available. Shortly before reaching the Karlovo Waterfall, right before the bridge, a dirt road branches off to the left. The trail ascends through deep soil gullies, starting with a steep 30-minute climb through thin woodland. Upon emerging onto an open meadow — where a green-marked trail splits off along the ridge toward Dobrila Hut — hikers should keep right, following the well-defined blue trail markers. This initial open section takes about 30 to 40 minutes, after which the trail dives into the refreshing shade of a dense forest. The next segment features a gentle slope and opens up to the most expansive panoramic view over Karlovo and the valley below. From this point, the path continues through a series of short ups and downs across rugged terrain, passing a charming small waterfall where the forest begins to coarsen. The rough tracking ends upon reaching the Barazh — a small fenced water intake structure for the local hydroelectric plant. Past this point, the trail levels out significantly, making the final 40 minutes of the walk easy and pleasant until reaching Hubavets Hut. The location serves as an excellent base for continuing onward to Balkanski Rozi, Vasil Levski, Ambaritsa, and Dobrila huts, or for taking on longer, challenging alpine routes to Botev Peak, Botev Shelter, and Ravnets, Ray, or Pleven huts.
