Balkanski Rozi Hut is the second mountain chalet located along the Stara Reka River, positioned directly between Hubavets Hut and Vasil Levski Hut. The trail starting from the town of Karlovo offers an engaging and diverse experience, leading hikers from the sub-Balkan fields into the mystical core of the Central Balkan Mountains. Covering a distance of 8.5 km with a total elevation gain of 600 meters (ascending from 483 m to 1083 m above sea level), the hike takes around 3 hours to complete. While the first half demands more effort due to the rugged terrain, the second half rewards hikers with a gentle, relaxing walk through breathtaking river landscapes. The route is entirely safe, and fresh drinking water is available at the trailhead, at both chalets along the way, and at two spots along the riverbank. The journey begins at the parking area located at the northern end of Vodopad Street in Karlovo. Just before the bridge leading to the Karlovo Waterfall, the trail turns left and starts with a steep 30-minute climb through forest gullies. Upon arriving at a panoramic meadow — where the green-marked trail branches off along the ridge toward Dobrila Hut — hikers continue to the right, following the reliable blue markers. This initial stage is the only open section of the trek (about 30 to 40 minutes), before the path plunges into the deep shade of a dense forest. The next segment features a dynamic terrain of short climbs and descents, passing a small waterfall along the river. The rough terrain officially ends at the Barazh water intake structure, where the path flattens out, leading smoothly to Hubavets Hut in about 40 minutes (making it a total of 2 hours from the start). The section connecting Hubavets Hut to Balkanski Rozi Hut is the most scenic and effortless part of the entire journey. The path winds along the very bed of the river with a minimal incline, crossing charming concrete bridges covered in vibrant green moss. About halfway through this section, hikers will encounter a humorous local landmark known as the Bear's Grave (Mechi Grob) — a pile of stones marked with a cross dedicated to a legendary wild bear. After an hour of easy walking through this enchanting valley, the trail reaches Balkanski Rozi Hut. The location serves as a perfect stepping stone for continuing onward to Vasil Levski Hut, Botev Shelter, and Botev Peak, while seasoned hikers can also use it to launch longer alpine routes toward Ravnets, Ray, Pleven, Ambaritsa, or Dobrila huts.
