Slivodolsko Padalo is one of the highest and most spectacular waterfalls in the Rhodope Mountains and throughout Bulgaria. Cascading down from an impressive height of 50 meters, this natural wonder offers incredible freshness and breathtaking views. The hike to the waterfall is relatively easy, pleasant, and short, making it a perfect destination for a day trip from Sofia or Plovdiv. The route is highly suitable for families with children and hikers who lack extensive experience on rugged terrains. Although unprepared tourists are occasionally spotted on the trail, it is strongly recommended to wear comfortable athletic or hiking shoes. The river that feeds this 50-meter beauty is named Slivov Dol. The entire canyon of the river is exceptionally picturesque. On your way to the main waterfall, you will enjoy dozens of smaller waterfalls, water cascades, crystal-clear deep blue pools, lush green forests, and beautifully sculpted cliffs. The area provides excellent conditions for weekend tourism, and the trip can easily be combined with visits to the nearby Bachkovo Monastery, Bachkovo Waterfall, and the authentic Rhodope village of Kosovo. Technical Trail Parameters: - Total Distance: 5.82 km (round trip). - Elevation Gain: 339 meters. - Lowest Point: 428 m above sea level. - Highest Point: 691 m above sea level. - Time to the Waterfall: About 1 hour. - Return Time: About 45 minutes. - Total Hiking Time (including rests): Around 2.5 hours. - Important Note: There are no drinking water fountains along the trail, so make sure to pack at least 1 liter of water. Logistics, Parking, and Starting Point To reach the starting point of the eco-trail, drive from Bachkovo Monastery toward Chepelare and Smolyan. About 4-5 kilometers past the monastery, you will pass through a road tunnel. Immediately after exiting the tunnel, turn right into the Tunela fish farm area. There is a designated parking space available for 6-7 cars. The approximate GPS coordinates of the parking lot are: 41.923677, 24.834034. After parking, cross the main road with caution. Right on the right-hand wall of the tunnel, you will see a clear yellow signpost marking the start of the trail to the waterfall. From this point forward, the route is excellently maintained, and the eco-trail is perfectly marked with numerous signs, making it impossible to get lost. Detailed Eco-Trail Description The perfectly marked trail features well-maintained wooden bridges and stairs, with old planks and railings being regularly replaced and reinforced. The hike alternates between slightly steep and completely flat sections. The path switches between the left and right banks of the river, sometimes guiding you right next to the waterbed and other times climbing high above the canyon. - First Cascades (10 minutes from the start): Very early into the hike, the first beautiful water cascades of the Slivov Dol River come into view. - The Small Villa (15 minutes from the start): The trail reaches a small villa located on Granichna Street. Right below its foundations, the river forms three beautiful consecutive drops. - The Green Bungalow and the Small Waterfall (40-45 minutes from the start): The path passes by a green bungalow, followed immediately by one of the higher intermediate waterfalls along the river stream. You can descend to its base if you wish, but keep in mind that the side path is quite steep. - Final Ascent to Slivodolsko Padalo: After the intermediate waterfall, a steeper climb follows for about 15 minutes. Soon, the roar of the water grows louder, and the majestic main waterfall reveals itself. At the mid-level of the Slivodolsko Padalo waterfall, there is a handmade wooden bench, which serves as the perfect spot to rest, take photos, and enjoy the soothing sound of nature. If you decide to go all the way down to the base of the 50-meter waterfall, exercise extreme caution, as the terrain there is very steep, narrow, and slippery.
