Kaloyan Peak (Kaloyanov Vrah) is one of the most preferred and easily accessible destinations for a quick mountain hike in the northern foothills of the Rhodope Mountains. Situated directly above the scenic village of Markovo, the peak offers hikers stunning panoramic views over the Plovdiv Valley and the vast Thracian Plain. As an excellent bonus to the trek, visitors can easily add a stop to exploring the historical ruins of the nearby medieval fortress known as Kaloyanovo Kale. Due to its sunny northern exposure and rapid access from the city of Plovdiv, the trail is highly popular during the first warm days of spring, when the mountain meadows open up with beautiful carpets of wild crocuses. Logistics, Parking, and Starting Point To begin the hike, drive from the village of Markovo along the asphalt road heading towards the mountain village of Galabovo. The route passes through sharp bends near the Manchova Polyana area. Immediately past these curves, a wide dirt road branches off to the left, marking the official start of the trail to the peak. Since the small shoulder at the trailhead is often packed with cars, hikers can use an alternative and much more convenient parking location: - The Junction for the Iglika Recreation Base: Located about 250 meters further up the main asphalt road to Galabovo. There is a wide paved square here, suitable for leaving your vehicle safely before starting the walk. Detailed Step-by-Step Hiking Route Description Stage 1: Steep Climb Along the Pine Forest From the parking lot at the Iglika junction, walk back down to the start of the wide dirt road and begin your ascent. This opening section is the most intense and physically demanding part of the entire trek, with GPS devices recording an incline of nearly 20 percent. The steep track requires short rest breaks but fortunately runs right along the edge of a dense, shaded pine forest that provides excellent shelter from the sun. Stage 2: Through the Scrublands to the Panoramic Ridge After clearing the initial steep hill, the dirt road takes a sharp left turn, leaving the coniferous forest behind. From this point forward, the terrain transitions into an open meadow area dominated by low shrubs and bushes. After another 100 meters, the trail bends sharply to the right. This mountain ridge marks the spot where hikers can detour to visit the Kaloyanovo Kale fortress. If your goal is to push straight to the summit to capture the best views, simply stay on the main path, tackling the final 100 meters of elevation gain. Stage 3: The Panoramic Viewpoint below the Summit Climbing up the open and steep northern slope quickly rewards hikers for their efforts. With every step forward, a magnificent panorama unfolds from an altitude of nearly 500 meters above sea level. Spreading out before visitors is a massive expanse encompassing the entire city of Plovdiv with its historic hills (tepeta), surrounding villages, and in the far distance, the ridges of Sredna Gora and the snow-capped main crest of the Balkan Mountains (Stara Planina). Along the path, there are several flat grassy meadows featuring old stone fire rings, making them perfect spots for an outdoor mountain picnic. The main dirt road ends at a clearing equipped with a built brick barbecue structure. This specific spot offers the clearest and most expansive view of the valley. It is useful to note that reaching the actual absolute summit of Kaloyan Peak is highly difficult, as the terrain past the barbecue clearing is completely overgrown with dense juniper bushes and thick dwarf trees. However, the panoramic terrace at the end of the road provides everything needed for a memorable weekend mountain adventure.
