The St. George Cathedral in Panagyurishte is a majestic monument of faith, architecture, and the Bulgarian spirit, built between 1856 and 1860. During a time of spiritual and economic growth, local residents decided to build the largest church in the town, uniting the efforts of the entire patriotic community. The main initiator of the construction was Pencho Hadzhilukov, who later sacrificed his life in the April Uprising. Master builders from Smolsko and architects from Constantinople were hired for the construction, while the original iconostasis in the Debar school style and the icons were created by the famous Dospevski family of painters from Samokov. During the tragic events of 1876, the church was shelled by Ottoman artillery and burned to the ground, leaving only its blackened stone walls standing. Following the liberation, the sanctuary was rebuilt, and valuable frescoes hidden under layers of whitewash were successfully restored and preserved a century later. The architecture of the church impresses with its grand scale and exceptionally solid construction, with walls reaching up to 1.5 meters in thickness. They are built from processed granite blocks quarried from the local Fetentsi area. The building is a three-nave pseudo-basilica with a beautiful open colonnade on the western side, above which two symmetrical bell towers were later erected. The interior space is spacious and well-lit by large windows. Massive columns divide the naves, and in the western part, there is a balcony used today by the church choir, which historically served as a separate section for women. The interior of the church houses a true artistic treasure created by National Revival masters. The space between the main hall and the altar is separated by a richly decorated three-winged iconostasis. Most of the icons, including the iconic images of Jesus Christ, Saint George, Saint John the Baptist, and the Holy Brothers Cyril and Methodius, were painted by the renowned Samokov artist Nikola Dospevski in the late 19th century. Other valuable icons in the temple were painted by Ivan Stoyanov Zografski, turning the cathedral into a remarkable showcase of Bulgarian Revival iconographic art.
