Bozhurishte

The town of Bozhurishte is one of the most dynamically developing and strategically positioned settlements in the Sofia Region. Nestled in the western part of the Sofia Plain at an altitude of 573 meters, the town is located just 13 kilometers northwest of downtown Sofia and 16 kilometers southeast of Slivnitsa. Bozhurishte possesses a highly unusual destiny—established at the end of the 19th century entirely as a strictly classified military site, it still does not have its own land territory to this day; its main section rests within the boundaries of Gurmazovo village, while the bustling "Maksim Gorki" district develops on the land of Prolesha village.

• The Cavalry Garrison: The history of Bozhurishte began in 1897 when the first stables and military warehouses were built on this strategic ground to supply the cavalry of the Bulgarian Army, marking the beginning of permanent military presence in the area.
• The Cradle of Bulgarian Aviation: Bozhurishte wrote golden chapters in national history as the true birthplace of Bulgarian aeronautics. In 1912, the very first military airfield in Bulgaria was founded here, later evolving into the State Airplane Workshop (DAR)—the first facility for domestic aircraft manufacturing.
