Popovoto Hanche (the Priest’s Inn) is the Hristo Botev Museum in the centre of the village of Butan, Kozloduy municipality. The inn was built in 1872. Botev’s band rested here after landing on Bulgarian soil in 1876.
A photographic, documentary and ethnographic exhibition tells of that time and of the 18 villagers who joined the band.
Also in the village centre is the Church of the Holy Saviour, from 1871, with the cell school on its ground floor.
After leaving the steamer Radetzky near Kozloduy, Botev’s band passed through Butan and stopped at the inn. Eighteen men from Butan went with it. After the band was crushed, only three returned alive to the village.
