Pobiti Kamani (Planted Stones) is a natural rock phenomenon located 18 km west of Varna along the Sofia–Varna highway, in Aksakovo Municipality. It is the only naturally formed desert-like landscape in Eastern Europe. The site covers 253.3 hectares across 18 groups of stone columns. The columns stand 5–10 metres tall with diameters of 0.3–3 metres and are hollow, filled with sand. They were formed approximately 50 million years ago (Lower Eocene) through anaerobic oxidation of methane, which caused carbonate precipitation around rising hydrocarbon fluid plumes — making them tubular concretions rather than erosion features. The largest cluster, Slunchevo-West (81.2 ha), and the Centre-South group (over 350 columns) are the most visited. The site was first described by Russian archaeologist Victor Teplyakov in 1829 and became Bulgaria's first state-protected natural landmark in 1937. The area also contains the only confirmed Mesolithic human remains found in Bulgaria. The main group has a visitor centre, parking, and a ticket office. Most of the other 17 groups are freely accessible.
