Marina Dupka is a cave system in the Fore-Balkan, in Tryavna municipality, about 20 minutes on foot from the village of Genchovtsi, in the "Propastite" ("the Chasms") area — named for its many sinkholes. The entrance is at 615 m. The mapped passages are 3,128 m long, with a 45 m difference in height.

What it is

The cave was carved in limestone by sinking water. People once entered by the lower entrance — a sinkhole that gathers water from about 4 km around; today it is silted up and passable only for the first 17 m. Entry is now through a shaft about 40 m away, in beech forest. A narrow, difficult section leads to a drop of about 35 m, where the main cave begins.

Two underground rivers flow through it, both ending in sumps. One is thought to emerge in the Zmeyovi Dupki cave, the other at the karst spring near Bozhentsi. The passages are tall but narrow. The largest hall, towards the old entrance, is about 30 m wide and 24 m high. Formations are plentiful, including stalagmites up to 4 m tall and rimstone pools of crystal-clear water.

Two stories explain the name. In one, a girl called Mara warned the outlaw Paro and his band of approaching posses by dropping pebbles into the shaft. In the other, it is "Parova Dupka", the steam hole, because steam rises from the opening in winter.

Visiting and safety

Marina Dupka is not for visitors. Going in needs climbing gear, a rope, a ladder and caving experience. The tight section before the drop is hard even for experienced cavers. After rain the rivers rise and some passages fill to the ceiling, so entering in wet weather is dangerous.
