The Kutra eco trail is a loop above Asenovgrad, on the northern slopes of the Rhodopes, past Kutra peak (555 m). It is marked in green, it is about 6 km long, and the loop takes about 2 hours 30 minutes.
The start is outside the Angel Kanchev school in Asenovgrad.
There is a car park in front of the school.
From the school the path passes the chapels of St Athanasius and St George and the first fountain under an old plane tree, then climbs stone steps between the houses to a forest path. A dirt track leads to the St Nestor chapel, with views over the Thracian plain and the Balkan range. Two switchbacks bring you to the meadow below Kutra peak (about 510 m). From there the path drops through forest to Danyova cheshma, with a gazebo and benches, and returns to town past more chapels. There are four fountains along the way.
Moderate: about 240 m of climbing, with a short steep stretch at the start. It uses streets, a dirt track and forest path.
All year. In summer start early, as the shade is mainly in the forest around Danyova cheshma.
The loop closes in town by the Dalbokata church of the Dormition, the oldest working church in Asenovgrad. The Slavchova path and the route to Bachkovo Monastery also start in town.
