Although it is the smallest reserve within Central Balkan National Park, Kozya Stena ("Goat Wall") ranks among the most magnificent, rugged, and dramatically precipitous natural sanctuaries in the Balkan Range. Nestled along the steep northern slopes above the village of Chiflik (Troyan Municipality), the reserve covers just over 904 hectares of sheer cliffs and ancient woodlands.
Officially designated a strict nature reserve on December 22, 1987, Kozya Stena was established with two primary conservation goals: safeguarding the rare endemic Balkan edelweiss and protecting old-growth mixed European beech and silver fir forests averaging over 100 years of age.
The terrain within Kozya Stena is extremely steep, rocky, and challenging to navigate. The undisputed centerpiece of the reserve is the vertical rock formation Kozya Stena, whose towering limestone cliffs plunge steeply into deep forest ravines. These jagged crags offer ideal nesting ledges for birds of prey.
Despite its compact size, Kozya Stena is a botanical treasure trove hosting over 40 plant species listed in the Red Data Book of Bulgaria and international conservation registries:
The combination of old-growth canopy and inaccessible cliffs creates a safe haven for wildlife, with over 60 bird species nesting in and around the reserve.
Six bird species protected under the Red Data Book of Bulgaria inhabit the sanctuary:
