Kovach Peak (2634 m), known until 1942 as Nalbant, is a prominent summit in the Eastern Rila Mountains. It gives its name to the Kovach ridge and presents a striking contrast of landscapes: while its eastern faces are vertical and favored by alpinists, its southern and northern slopes are well-suited for hiking. The summit offers expansive views over Central Rila and the Rhodope Mountains. Hiking Routes The peak is most easily accessible from the Yakoruda municipality, offering two primary approaches: - From "Nehtenitsa" Area (Easiest): The trail follows the Malka Banenska River heading north. After about an hour and a half, you reach the southern slope, which is gentle and allows for an easy ascent to the top. - From Granchar Hut (Scenic): Follow the main trail toward Musala Peak until you reach the Dzhanka saddle (Dolni Kuki). From there, turn south along the ridge. The hike from the saddle takes approximately 1 hour. The final ascent via the northern slope is steep but technically safe. Alpinism and Terrain The eastern walls of Kovach are a true draw for climbers, offering serious vertical routes. The peak serves as an important orographic hub, dominating the skyline of this section of the mountain. Practical Information - Altitude: 2634 m. - Difficulty: Easy to Moderate (hiking). - Starting Points: Yakoruda (Nehtenitsa area) or Granchar Hut. - Duration: Between 1:30 and 2:30 hours depending on the chosen starting point.
