Chuprene Reserve protects the ridge and north-eastern slopes of the Chiprovtsi mountains, part of the Western Balkan range in Vidin Province, near the village of Chuprene. It was established in 1973 and covers about 1,452 hectares.
The reserve was created for its old spruce and fir forests, with extensive spruce stands more than a century old and beech mixed in lower down. Some 68 bird species have been recorded here, including capercaillie, and wolves live in the reserve permanently.
Chuprene is a strict reserve: you may only cross it on marked trails, and nothing may be picked or disturbed. There are no facilities inside. It suits experienced walkers on the Western Balkan ridge rather than casual visitors, and the nearest town with a good choice of accommodation is Belogradchik.
