Abrittus is a remarkably well-preserved Roman city located in Northeastern Bulgaria. Situated just 2.5 km from the center of Razgrad, this archaeological reserve is one of the 100 National Tourist Sites of Bulgaria. Its name, of Latin origin, means "steep," referring to the local topography. History and Heritage Built upon the ruins of a Thracian settlement, Abrittus evolved from a 1st-century military camp into a flourishing Roman city by the 2nd century. - Cultural Peak: Between the 2nd and 4th centuries, Abrittus became a major economic hub with planned streets, a central forum, and advanced plumbing. - Spiritual Hub: By the 5th century, it served as a Christian bishopric. - Destruction and Continuity: After being destroyed by the Avars in 586 AD, a medieval Bulgarian settlement existed on the site between the 7th and 10th centuries. Significant Discoveries The site is world-renowned for several major archaeological finds: - Grand Villa: A massive 3,000-square-meter residential building with an Ionic colonnade and a row of 25 shops. - Defense Systems: The entire fortification wall, 4 main gates, and 29 towers have been excavated and preserved. - The Golden Hoard: Abrittus is the site where the largest late-antique gold treasure in Bulgaria was found—835 Roman coins from the 5th century. The famous Golden Pegasus is another masterpiece discovered in the region. Visiting Today The reserve offers a modern museum experience, including an outdoor Lapidarium and an Interactive Museum that brings Roman history to life through engaging technology.
