The Vera Nedkova House Museum is the painter’s flat at 2 Ulitsa 11-ti Avgust, behind the Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia. It opened in 2004 and is a branch of the National Gallery.
The flat is on the second floor of a residential building. It belonged to the Nedkov family after their return from Vienna, and Vera Nedkova painted some of her best-known works here. Her paintings hang in the rooms where they were made.
Vera Nedkova (1906–1996) was born in Skopje to the trade agent and diplomat Todor Nedkov and grew up in Budapest, Bern and Bucharest. She studied painting in Sofia under Prof. Nikola Marinov, graduated from the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts in 1930, then trained in restoration and spent nine months in Florence. She returned to Bulgaria in 1934, joined the Society of New Artists and belonged to the generation that renewed Bulgarian art in the 1930s. In 1995 she left everything she owned to the state through the National Gallery, on condition that the bequest be kept together in memory of her family.
The National Gallery’s house museums open on weekdays only, Tuesday to Friday; check the gallery’s website for times. Tickets are also sold at the National Gallery ticket offices.
