The National Ethnographic Museum is in the east wing of the former royal palace in central Sofia, on Knyaz Alexander I Square / Tsar Osvoboditel Boulevard. It shares the building with the National Gallery. The museum belongs to the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Ethnology and Folklore Studies and is one of the Hundred National Tourist Sites.
The museum keeps and shows the traditional culture of Bulgarians — daily life, dress, crafts and customs. Since 1954 it has occupied the palace’s east wing, which once held the royal family’s bedrooms, reception rooms and private studies. The palace building has been a cultural monument of national importance since 1978.
The museum grew out of the ethnographic department of the National Museum in Sofia, founded in 1892, which became a separate National Ethnographic Museum in 1906. Its building was destroyed in the bombing of 1944. Part of the collection survived because it had been evacuated in 1941 to the girls’ school on Tsar Shishman Street, though a burst water main damaged it there. Curators spent years restoring and rebuilding the collection. In 1949 the museum merged with the Institute of Folk Studies into the Ethnographic Institute with Museum, and since 2010 it has been part of today’s institute.
